Import Royal Enfield from India to Europe
 

Hello,

I create this new thread to update and concentrate information about the topic; importing Royal Enfield bikes from India to Europe. I have read many different experiences and I will like to share my little knowledge about that altought I still in India.

Me and one friend we are planing an overland trip from south India to Spain with two royal enfield. We will be leaving on March 2014 from south India to Spain, crossing India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and others.

I have residence permit in India that allowed me to purchase
the first bike and transfer the ownership papers onto my name. I bought
a 1987 Classic 350. The decision to buy this bike was primarily
because I had understood that it would be much cheaper and easier to
register (once in Spain) the bike as a historic vehicle (the condition
for that is that the bike should be older than 25 years).

Searching for information I found many people who have done the same
but with new Royal Enfields as for exemple "Ben Marlow & Patch

For the second bike I will like to buy a 2007-2009 500cc model, but I'm wondering if then it will be a hassle to register that bike in Europe as it
hasn't more than 25 years old and that means the bike will be
submitted to emissions tests, noise tests, match the EU standards, etc, and much more expensive as I will have to pay import duties.

Is that correct?

Do you have updated information about that subject?

You´ll have to ask the authorities in your country. But if I have to guess, I´m afraid that´s how it´s gonna be.

(In fact nowadays I would not count on being able to register an Indian-spec motorcycle in the EU at all, unless it is a historic vehicle).

Registering Indian internal market Enfields in Europe is not really possible anymore unless they meet country regulations as a classic import, where they are not subject to either Euro emission controls or EU build standard requirements. Enfields which are built for the European market were and are significantly different, and the cost of updating one to meet Euro regulations can be quite prohibitive. If you can find a European Export model in India and obtain a European Certificate of conformity from Chennai then it's not really a problem.
I imported a 2004 U.K. spec 350 into France in 2007 and it was quite straightforward with the Cert of Conformity.

If you can't get a European Certificate of Conformity for any bike, it 's almost a complete waste of time trying to import a bike into Europe unless it meets the target countries classic vehicle regulations.

With a carnet de passage from India to Pakistan
 

Can I travel with a carnet de passage obtained in India to Pakistan? I want to make the tour India - Germany with a Mercedes-Benz W123 next autumn with my family. However, people tell me border crossing is not possible and I should buy and register the car in Nepal.

People prefer registering in nepal coz its easy to register there even if u r not a resident of nepal and easy to get carnet.. but in india registering becomes bit difficult but though u can do it. so drop the idea for nepal, u can get a mercedes here registered in your name if u r in work visa . and crossing pakistan is not that must prob if u r having all things ready like carnet RC book, insurance, pollution control certificates and safetly measures and u should set up all the things before u move. things are never impossible they are jst diificult .
Kindly make this to your notice, getting a carnet will require the submission of 3 times the cost of the car as security deposit which wil b a lot for mercedes W123

Are you serious? Crossing Pakistan is not that much a problem?
Which country do you live in?
I would love to know how can we cross from India to Pakistan by road? :P
