I want to buy a bike in Brasil and ride it home to Canada

Hello,
I took a flight here, and am now in Salvador Brasil. I would like to buy a bike and ride it home, but don't know if its possible. Do I need a Brasilian addresse to register ownership(Q).
Any advice would be appreciated.

Tudo Bem Peter?

Just a few words of caution. Getting your motorcycle registered in Canada may be extremely difficult. The Canadian Registrar of Motor vehicles said that No motorcycles less, than 15 years old, that were not made for a North American market are able to be registered in Canada. However if you manage to cross the border I think you may be able to register it. I did.
Be careful of the customs guys.

In Brasil you may be able to get better deals on bikes in Manaus as it is duty free, be careful of the Brasilian made 'japanese' bikes such as the HOnda Xr250s. I believe that they are using lower quality components than those made in Japan.
I tried unsuccesfully to buy a bike in Manaus where I was living even though I had working papers. I could buy the bike, I just couldn't register it in my name, this could be problematic. If you have a good friend in Toronto it may be possible for them to send you a licence plate and some papers...

Hi,

Your post has been moved from the "events" page where it definitely doesn't fit, to the best fit: "Travellers' questions that don't fit anywhere else!"

Lost1 is correct, registering a Brazilioan bike in Canada is theoretically impossible, and practically speaking extremely difficult or impossible depending on the province.

Getting registration and plates sent down is impossible - there is no way Canadian MVB is going to issue plates without seeing the bike.

If you can't register the bike in Brazil in your name you won't be able to get out of the country with it, or into the next one if you should be able to "manage" getting out. It's been tried.

check the HUBB forum "Travel Bikes for sale" and see if there is anything suitable available somewhere in SA. Bolivia - Walter Nosiglia's shop in La Paz - is a good place to start if you want to buy a bike and take it out of the country. Brazil is not.

If you do buy a bike and ride it home and can't register it, you could advertise it on the HUBB for sale, and sell to someone who wants to ride to SA and sell there.

Good luck,
