Hitting the road...

Hi all,

I'm on a mission to sell my house, quit the job, quit this shit country and hit the road on July 28th. I've built a diesel Enfield and have no plan on where to go. I'll be 29 and it seems a great way to end my 20's. I can take as long as I want but a year sounds good.

I've a couple questions which are pretty generic, just to get my brain going in the right redirection. So far I've focused only on getting the house ready to sell and developing a large website for the trip (not yet up but soon).

First question is when do I need to start planning visas? It might be a bit difficult not knowing exactly where I'm going or how long I'll be there. (I'll be going straight from the UK to Greece and then from there east. I'd like to try 'non European' countries).

Second question is on Australia / New Zealand. I'm told that I have to import the bike - this may be a problem as so much of it is non-standard. I wouldn't like to get it all the way there and then find it's rejected. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

I won't need to work cash wise when I'm away, but I'd like too just to feel the culture and environment. I'm a qualified QTS teacher so could do a bit of that, or bar work, or whatever. Are recent travellers finding there is much of this about in the economic downturn?

The fun starts here. :thumbup1:

Thanks, Andrew

Getting a Carnet might be interesting as well!

Go for it and have fun

Are you talking about the estimated value? I presumed that was the only variable in the carnet? Can't be as bad as taking a Beemer.

I presume if I go to Iran I'll have to pick up the visa from another countries consulate (the UK one is closed).

hi snoopy
planning is key why don't you rent your house out alot of people on HU fund there trips that way rent out for 6 months or rent a room save the money for 6 months and then go on a small one first while your planning the big one just make sure its what you want to do. Always good to have somewhere to come back too. This site is brillant for info on planning trips to any country.Good luck with RTW and happy:scooter::scooter:
