Ear Plugs and IPod
 

Not sure if this has been addressed before but I could not find it anywhere.

Now this might be a very daft question but ......

I wear ear plugs for all riding (even commuting). I would like the option of listening to my IPod from time to time (not too loud of course!). Anyway, are these two things totally incompatible or are there options for protecting ones hearing but also listenting to music while travelling?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Did a research on that issue a long while ago:

Musicians use earplugs with speakers - very good quality, very high price which put me off...

Expensive at around £150 with monitors.

I use custom made solid plugs and can easily hear my intercom so maybe some "in helmet" speakers would be a cheaper alternative.

I'm using shure in ear headphones for two years now and they work very well. they are basically an earplug with loudspeaker.

I use seinheiser ear phones and they cancel some of the sound but I sure like the look of those sure ones they look really neat.

I use custom earplugs and a headset that pipes music through it. See here:

The music is crystal clear. Great stuff!

I also use a Belkin remote control that I taped to the inside of the hand protector. This gives a lot of flexibility with an IPod.

You can use one of these kits, to mould your own in-ear plugs - it can't be too complicated to incorporate your ipod headphones - at 12.99 its worth a try.

I've been using these for a few years now, I picked them up on the Norway ferry. They work really well up to about 60mph when the wind noise wins. Cheap too.

I had some ear plugs with speakers made up at the motorbike show at the NEC last year, your right they are expensive but I think well worth it. Sound quality is fantasic.

Have you thought about a full intercom system? Then you have the speakers inside the helemt, but only need to plug them in when you want, then just use the cheapo foam earplugs for removing most of the riding noise and protect your hearing, they do not interfere with the music quality and Autocom at least works right up at the 160kmh mark :)

I had a pair of the cheap Koss plugs, $40 wasted, they immediately went into the garbage. Pay a little more for something that lasts and get some quality sound at the same time.

Been using these for a couple of years now, were expensive at around 150GBPs but as they are moulded to your own ear, its the only way you'll cut out most of the wind noise. I guess a well fitted helmet will also help it there isn't already too much wind noise.

Just rode 660kms yesterday fron Laos back down to Bangkok and listening to music on these long stretches really helps the boredom! Not recommended for use in heavy traffic though!!!

Ultimate ear plugs cost over a hundred pounds but are brilliant.
...well were brilliant. I lost them about a month after buying them. Think wife might have thrown them out thinking they were chewing gum or one of those sick blob toys kids buy.
