Carnet de Passages for Africa

Ok, the trip is coming up and we were about to finalize the Carnet for Africa but didn't realize that there was a fee for the actual Carnet PLUS an extra fee for the "insurance" or cash deposite. Do we really need to lay $15,000. down for the two bikes? or is there any other way around this?:confused1:

Wherearounds do you live? When in Europe you could contact the german automobile association, the ADAC in Munich. They also offer carnets also for persons living outside Germany.

A few years ago I needed a carnet, and paid a fee of € 150. That was it. Had to deposit the equivalent of my bikes value, but a minimum of € 3,000. A year later, after I returned to Europe, the 3k € where refunded without any additional fee.

Check out this thread.

Having been down the East coast to Cape Town with a carnet, I'm convinced by this report that the carnet wasn't necessary.

There are other posters around the HUBB that report doing numerous African countries without CDP.
Temporary import permits seem to be the way to go, overall cheaper than the CDP.

McCrankpin, any thoughts on whether lack of CdP would apply to 4x4 's as well as motorcycles?

Thanks
Richard

Well, I've no experience of that at all! (But thanks for asking)

All I'd say is that we did cross a few borders in the company of 4-wheel travellers (with CDPs), and the officials seemed to treat those vehicles more 'seriously' - for want of a better word - than us bikes.

But maybe some 4-wheelers would pass on their experiences of not having a CDP.

I had a feeling that a bit more scrutiny of documents etc may be the case with 4x4's, with the obvious danger that they are perhaps viewed as easier/wealthier targets by unscrupulous border 'officials'!

this is a way around it. don't have one!
i rode the west coast with no carnet and a friend did the east coast without one. egypt is the only 'impossible' country to get into without a carnet.

i read a post very recently about someone blog of doing all of africa (except egypt) without a carnet. can't find it now sorry. just do a good search and you should find it.
