Travelling with man's best friend!!

I saw a post on travel with dogs a while back, but that was for research for a book. Personally, I am interested in people's experiences from the administrative/regulation point of view.

We live in Tallinn, Estonia. We now have a Ural outift and we plan firstly to use this to possibly venture into the Murmansk region of the Kola Peninsula, but future plans also include a big ol' trip to Siberia.

One of the reasons we bought this bike is because we wanted to get a dog, but we did not want this to stop our love of travel in its tracks.

Pretzl the dog has been tagged, vaccinated and will soon be neutered. She has a valid EU animal passport. If we cross the Russian border are there any problems getting back in without poor Pretz' having to be Quarantined? We recently met up with a fellow HUBBer and that point was raised as a possible concern to consider.

Crossing to the UK, I can understand the quanrantine thing, being a Rabies-free island. However, most other European nations have land borders which mean little to wild animals, so would there be much point imposing re-entry restrictions on domestic pets?

There not being a point to it, does not mean the powers that be have not decided to impose terms regardless.

Whilst travelling by bike, we met two couples travelling with their canine companion in campers. The first couple were dutch and drove to India where they crashed the camper on the way home - the dog flew back to Holland with no problems.
The second couple (also from Holland) spent time in Morroco before travelling back to Holland with their dog without any problems.

We now have a 4x4 and have researched this as our dog travels with us and the only countries with restrictions are UK, Australia and New Zealand.

That is great news!! Thanks for that: we were worried that it could be a complication for us, but now we can plan freely!!

Once in Ausatralia (another Rabies-free island).. there are various National Parks that have restrictions on dogs - from 'Not Alowed at All' to 'On A Lead At All Times' ... to no restriction. Another thing to watch for are signs of 1080 bates (poision) being around.

Warthog, I'm the one doing the research for the book. Just to add, Hawaii, another island, is another place with a quarantine, though they too have the possibility now of the six month wait time being forfeited if the animal has had the jabs, paperwork, microchip etc.

If you're travelling, or know others who have, I am still collecting stories, along with pictures! For ANYONE wanting to see their loved one in a book, I'm happy to send an article I already did for a magazine if you would like to see what the basic structure of the book will be. And, it'll also give you an idea of what to expect, dangers to look out for etc. It's in PDF format, so you need Adobe to see it.

As far as the GlobeTrotting Pets book, the only pitfall with this, is that it's generally geared for pets flying into a country. The rules for overlanding are drastically different! For example, going into Costa Rica or Panama by air, is EXTREMELY discouraging. By ground, you fill out a form showing rabies vaccinations (but not always), and your hound is in. Many other countries you don't even do that... :-)

Also, there's medicine to alleviate puking in the sidecar. ;-)

Just been for a week in Morocco, and had a lunchbreak with a German couple who're heading home after getting down to Togo/Benin region. He was on a KTM625 and his partner on a motorcross outfit with a BMW 650 engine fitted - and effectively a kennel for their Labrador-sized dog. Apparently this posed no problems with Border formalities, it impressed me no end...

I'm looking for motorcycling people with their dogs for a regular piece I do for Fido Friendly, a dog mag devoted to traveling people. No pay for you (and darn little for me) but publicity for you and your hound. Any takers?
