My two have already been mentioned.

'Born To Be Wild' by Steppenwolf. There comes a moment on any trip where you have ridden slowly, warming the bike up and letting the luggage settle, and then you start to pick up the pace and start proper riding. That's when those clangy guitar chords in the song's intro start to chime in my head, and I become Dennis Hopper.

Later in the day, when the road is good and the speeds are higher, that's when Chris Spedding's 'Motorcyclin' starts to play inside the old helmet.

Movin' on the Queen's Highway, movin' like a streak of lightnin'
When you gotta go, go, gotta go motorbike ridin'

Yes!

So many Frank Turner songs which could fit the bill for this thread - Vital Signs, I Am Disappeared, Journey of the Magi, Wanderlust - although 'The Road' is probably at the top of the list.

I'd also add "After the Rush Hour", from the Million Dead days.

I am the small town linesman
And you'll find me out here on the line.
Searching ceaselessly to simply
Find a place i can call mine.
Every corner of this country
Criss-crossed out with coloured lines.
The city lies before me,
Another city sprawling out behind.
Since the Scramble ended,
Since the West was won with wagon trails,
It seems the Mazzini's paradisical
Panopticon prevailed.
My walkabouts no longet take me
Beyond a choice of different gaols.
Why should i have to choose a state
When every one of them has failed?
I am a frontiersman,
Trapped in suburban England.
And i promise not to overthrow the state
If allowed to redraw the atlas before
I emigrate.
So I have sailed the seven seas alone,
Trying to find a shore I can call home.
But all i found are different flags,
Double-speaking diplomats, and
I do not have time for that.
So I'll declare my own sovereign state,
The borders based on the
Bottoms of my boots,
And i will open embassies
Wherever the hell i please,
And at assemblies
You will see me sat
But never on my knees.
And I'd gladly leave your
Metternich's alone as long as where
I lay my head i can be my very own.
I am the Winchester lineman.
I am a frontiersman,
Trapped in suburban England,
But here I will not remain-
I'll ride into the sunset,
My horse waits on the plain,
And I keep walking the line.

Anything by the mighty Status Quo...

Though more recently... Smash Mouth - All Star ( there are some decent acoustic covers on youtube BTW ) + Anything by Little Green Cars or Lau...

All time favourite has to be ''Soul Less'' by Turin Brakes... An uber rare B side to the single 'Feeling Oblivion'...

Soul Less

I need much more than my name on the door,
A company car and abuse from the bored/board
A favour for favours routine

So i'm taking a stand, from standing in line
I'm sick of the sickness, i'm serious this time
I'm buring to break, free...

But it's all right if your soul less...

I am really digging this thread! I have found a lot of songs I know and many other good ones that I'd never heard. Thanks!

Here is a post I did a while back on my Top 100 Motorcycle Tunes:

It is maybe a little bit offtopic - but on a longterm trip i suggest to not only use Songs - during driving.

We sit 300 hours in our car, during our transafrica (2 months, 20k km) - and we loves to hear some audiobooks.

Maybe this is to dangerous for biking - but for travelling by car - it was really nice!

Just to hear music - is not enough for extended travelling :innocent:

Dirty Three

This can be pretty good to listen to along a good road on an easy-going ride.

Time to reignite this post.

Aerosmith/S. Tyler later sung by Guns and Roses

"Mama Kin"

It ain't easy, livin' like a gypsy.
Tell ya, honey, how I feel.
I've been dreaming,
Floatin' down stream and
Losin' touch with all that is real.
Whole earth lover, keepin' under cover
Never knowin' where ya been.
You've been fadin', always out paradin.
Keepin' touch with Mama Kin.

Well you've always got your tail on the wag.
Shootin' fire from your mouth just like a dragon.
You act like a perpertual drag.
You better check it out,
Or someday soon you'll have to climb back on the wagon.

It ain't easy, livin' like ya wanna,
And it's so hard to find piece of mind. Yes it is.
The way I see it, you've got to say shit.
But don't forget to drop me a line.

Said you're as bald as an egg at eighteen.
And workin' for you dad is just a drag.
He still stuffs your mouth with your dreams.
You better check it out,
Or someday soon you'll have to climb back on the wagon.

Keepin' touch with Mama Kin.
Tell her where you've gone and been.
Livin' out your fantasy,
Sleeping late and smoking tea.
[repeat once]

Can' t beat a bit of Vaughn-Williams IMHO, although possibly now with the Guzzi I should find the Verdi, or the combine harvester song by the Worzels!

Just about any song from Santiano, particularly Santiano, Frei Wie der Wind, Gott Muss ein Seeman sein, Tanz mit Mir (with Faun), and Es Gibt Nur Wasser. Then Divna Ljubojevic for when in traffic ( to keep from kicking the cars, LOL):D

Lonerider 31 Jul 2014 11:27

Anything by Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Guns and Roses
Ummmmm showing my age

Pongo 1 Aug 2014 08:06

Missed this the first and second time round. much as i like most music as long as it's not banging my head and ear drums, there is only one piece for me that is so evocative by it's first chord, that it stops everything else I'm doing and brings a grin to my face.

Eagles- Take it easy. I've stood on a corner in Winslow on a warm summers day and this takes me back to the American west coast and esp riding from San Diego up to San luis Obispo on the ''1'' way back in 1985 on a clapped out panhead. Happy days.
