Battery date stamp/codes

Can anyone explain the code numbers and letters stamped on the positive and negative terminals on both car and motorcycle batteries. Does the letter "E" stand for '05? etc etc
There must be a standard that all battery manufacturers use.

I just need to work out how old a battery is that I have.
