Affordable Care Act / Obamacare requirements for travelers?
Does anyone know what the requirements are for us 'Muricans if we spend a great deal of time traveling and living outside of the US? Do we still have to purchase a plan even though there is no way we could ever use it while overseas?

People who live 330 days or more per year outside the US would we exempty from purchasing healthcare. People who reside and pay income taxes in another country can be exempt.

But what about transients like us going from country to country?

We may come back to the US for a month, spend 5 months traveling abroad, come back again for a couple weeks, then go back to traveling.

I'm OK purchasing short term 1-month health coverage for my trips back to the US, but I certainly don't want to be forced to enroll in a domestic 6 month policy on the healthcare marketplaces if I'm only going to be in the country for 1 month out of that 6 and buying separate international travel health insurance for the other 5 months...

Good question.
You know you can call the toll free ACA hotline and talk to someone. YES! They are there and quite helpful! I'm "guessing" buying coverage would be a big PLUS and would probably mean that when traveling ... the ACA has you covered outside the USA ... depending on which plan and what level of coverage you sign up for. This could eliminate the need for additional travel heath insurance coverage.

Most health plans before the ACA covered foreign travel. So, good chance your ACA policy would cover it as well. You have options when choosing a plan ... so pick a provider and coverage that covers foreign travel. I'm pretty sure it's offered.

You may have to pay some Co-Pays to foreign providers but I'm betting the BULK of expenses will be covered ... including transport back home. But call and check it out.

(and don't forget ... in many countries Health Care is FREE (or almost free) to everyone ... including foreigners)
