Turkmenistan & Uzbekistan

Dear riders,

has anybody of you been recently in Turmenistan and Uzbekistan (and perhaps also in Georgia and Armenia)?

Are those regions affected by criminality, danger and annoyance? Do you think are safe places to ride for a couple (my wife and me) on a striking red BMW 1100 GS?

We have good experience of long distance motorbiking travels (North Africa, Middle East, Iran, West and East Europe), but I feel Central Asia as a dangerous place.

Many thanks for any info

Pietro

You can check the website of the US Stae department: www.travel.state.gov/travel_warnings. This website gives accurate information, although in american view: everything is 'poor' or 'dangerous'. By the way: I plan to travel to Central Asia in 2004!

Have a good time,

Hi Pietro,
On July 28, 2002 I tried to enter Georgia from Russia (near Sochi) with a Georgian visa in my possession, but was turned back at the Russian border post and told to take a plane, that this border has been closed since 1999. Other travellers told me that all land borders between Russia and Georgia are closed since the resumption of the war with Chechnia. This is not so between Georgia and Turkey, and Georgia and Azerbaijan. So make your plans accordingly.

Thank you Werner for the advice: I didn't write it in the original message, but I don't even think to go to Russia from Georgia. My plan is to reach Turkey.

Dangerous part is between Georgia and Russia, called Abhazia. Georgian auth. say they have no control of that region.
