Travel in North Arfrica and war in Iraq
 

Hi travellers,

What's your opinion on (safe) travelling in North Africa (Tunesia, Algeria and Morocco) in case of war in Iraq.

I'm planning Morocco in April/May. The UK Foreign Office has this to say:

Travellers to Morocco should be aware of the impact that recent developments in Iraq, as well as the violence between the Israelis and Palestinians, has had across the Arab world and the risk of public disturbance in response. You should follow news reports and be alert to developments in the Middle East that might trigger public disturbances.

Some towns and cities have planned local-level demonstrations over coming weeks, usually on the weekend. You should take sensible precautions for your personal safety and avoid public gatherings and demonstrations. Any increase in regional tension might affect travel advice

It also says: "The vast majority of visits to Morocco are trouble-free"

I'm still on for it...so far.

I'm planning to go there for three weeks starting April 18th. Dutch Foreign Office says something like yours. '

I posted this message just to see how other people think about it. Off course the whole situation will greatly depend on how the war develops. For now I'm still going but I'm very interested to hear from people/travellers who are in or have just left Morocco, Algeria and Tunesia.

I think with any situation, you need to decide how much of a risk you are prepared to take, then weigh up the situation prior to leaving.

I am currently in ALexandria, having come solo by bike through Libya and have had nothing but friendliness and hospitality from everyone.

W.R.T the current situation and the riots in Cairo, I have been advised to stay out for tomorrow, being the day of prayer, but after that, not to worry. (THis coming from a police station commander)
His opinion has been backed up by 3 or 4 others as well.

As regards Morrocco, I was there when America started attacking Afghanistan in 2001 and I felt totally safe, most of the population had no problems with me at all.
That said, it is always worth taking extras precautions during these times.

Geoff, yours is the kind of reaction I'm looking for. I hope more people on the road now will give there opinion later.

I am now in Cairo.
Although I feel uncomfortable, probably because I can't understand Arabic, everything appears relatively safe.

I have had a few dark looks but on the whole, people have still been friendly.
I am wearing an identifier to South Africa all the time, my SA Rugby Jersey, and a lapel badge for my jacket, which seems to help.
The security here is extremely tight at the moment.
I spoke to a Kiwi bloke yesterday who was here over the last few days. He said it has been uncomfortable, he came across roaming groups of demonstrators every now and then, but he reckons the threat is more perceived perceived than real.
