Theft in San Jose, Costa Rica
 

Some bastard stole my compressor and first aid kid last night here in San Jose. It was locked on the bike and inside a locked sucurity garage/cage at Hostal El Chante :thumbdown: near the city centre. No way in if gate is locked. The Hostal staff either didn't bother to lock the gate or stole it themselves. So if you looking for a place to stay with safe parking around here, stay somewhere else.
It is not that a too expensive loss ($200), but annoys the hell out of me.
We've been through 36 countries and this is our first 'lost' goods. It's a shame, as now my whole outlook on Costa Rica is negative.

You think San Jose, Costa Rica is bad? Check out the crime stats for San Jose, California (San Jose Crime Statistics and Crime Data (San Jose, CA))...

12,678 thefts in 2006 alone, never mind the 29 murders or 217 rapes... Those silicon valley nerds are a tough bunch..

The lesson here is *don't judge an entire country by one little piddly $200 theft*. Costa Rica is one of the safest and most civilized countries on the planet - its the Canada of Latin America. If you can't trust Costa Rica then you can't trust humanity...

My purpose of the post was not to warn you about San Jose, as it actualy is a nice city, but to warn you about the 'safe' parking that above hostal claim to have. It clearly is not safe to park your bike at that hostal.

And if you want to compare stats, very few places come close to where I'm from (South Africa), but that does not make it a bad country to visit.
