Singapore regulations
 

Just came into Singapore today and can advise the difficulty I had. Firstly I entered the island at the Tusa entrance.. was turned away due to not having an CPI or something. This needs to be obtained from the AA within Singapore before entering with the bike. I suggest you enter vie the main road that runs in the centre of the island.

The other annoying thing is this ERP wierd contraption that deducts money as you pass under the roads close to the city centre. Any one else know about this???

Yes we do know what it is. An electronic method for paying road tolls. But no we did not get one. Took the risk and figured that we could act dumb. Australians are very good at that. Used our bikes as little as possible in Singapore. Parking your bike near cheap backpackers hostels is a real nightmare. In fact parking in Singapore is a real nightmare. Singapore without a bike is fun, but we were glad to see the back of the place once we had our bikes. And dont forget that insurance, ie. third party insurance, is a lot lot cheaper in Malaysia than Singapore so is worth the qick train trip into Jahore to purchase it. Malaysian insurance is valid in Singapore.

If you haven't got the CPI (insurance cert from the Singapore AA) before you enter this is what you have to do:

Ride to the border (pref the one that enters Singapore from the north not the TUSA border).

At the border you will need to leave your bike and go into Singapore to get the CPI document which is the insurance cert from the AA there. The LTA (Land Transport Authority) people will be able to give you the address for them (I don't have and will explain why later).

With this doc (10 Sing dollars) you can then go back to the border and rent a Electronic Road Payment gadget to fit to your bike (7 dollars apparently). This allows you to ride under the ERP sensers deducting money off your gadget and therefore paying for use of the city centre's roads. All foriegn vehicles need this apparently. If you don't have this and rode under the sensors you will be photographed.

Now, I didn't do this and if I got caught, I would have a lot of explaining to do but.... I was only going there for a night!

On my second attempt at Singapore that day I met a very nice border official who let me in as long as "we don't know each other" if I got caught. Bit stressful avoiding the ERP's and police but made it nevertheless. I would suggest the legal way to avoid stress and maybe Changi jail/hefty fine.
