Safe to travel to mauritania?

I am suppose to be leaving for my trip on my bike from The Gambia up to Spain. I was planning to leave on the 2nd of june and to pass through Senegal with a few stops then reach Mauritania a week later the 9th of June. I realise elections will be on around this time. Does anyone know if border will definately be closed or whether it be safe to pass through if it is?

Just came through

I came through Mauritania a few days ago heading south. One person did say to watch out during the elections but that was all. The biggest problem I encountered was a lack of petrol. It's in short supply at most places so make sure you have reserves.
Cheers
Ed

Thanks for the advice! I should be arriving just after the elections so I should know the situation before I get to the border. Thanks again.

I think it's relatively safe, but I would take the normal precautions of keeping away from large demonstrations and the like. Police used tear gas at a demo in NBD, but otherwise it looks OK
