Think Top Gear might have a lot to answer for. My Oh wants to plan a trip to Transfagarasan will be keeping an eye on the tips and info on here.
It looks like it could be a challange.

I toured there in 08 from Scotland via Holland Germany Austria Slovenia Croatia Serbia entering Romania at Timosoara heading through Diva, the Transfaaragen Highway to Pitesti then up to Bran (Dracula's castle) Brasov Cluj Napoca before making our way towards Budapest.
Amazing country, nice people and good food in general, roads in the southern part (Including large part of the Transfaragen Highway) are terrible and the driving is interesting! Camping is no problem, we were lucky to stop the second night at a Dutch run Campsite and were warned to stick with the reccommended sites. Toilet facilities in some of the dodgier Romanian sites are allegedly bad ( In fact at some roadside cafe's a strong stomach was needed to go to the bog) Stick to the sites on here http://www.eurocampings.co.uk/en/europe/romania/

In general a brilliant tour and well worth doing before it becomes mainstream Europe! Only thing else is if you are going through Serbia make sure you have a green card covering you for here (in fact insist on one for all these countries from your insurer) otherwise its 85 Euro for their basic insurance! The North of Romania seems more like the places where the tourist board would take their pictures, other places look very poor but authentic! Petrol is no problem (In fact Petrol stations are always an oasis where you can enjoy OK food and clean bogs)
I have a write up of the trip at The trip idea

And its also in Real classic online magazine!
I'd go back, enjoy!

I rode from the UK to Romania last summer - great place, Transfagarasan is awesome, people friendly, food not bad either.
My advice is don't camp! Campsites there are generally very dirty, and not particularly safe. I was told this before I went and didn't believe it could really be that bad...but it is! Guesthouses are cheap - and you'll meet some nice locals.
Have a good trip!

found this on the net some time ago for Romania, can't remember where, but it's now part of my "remember" list which I'm collecting for my trip in to the Balkan.... may help's a bit...

-----------
petrol:
for fuel only stop at big filling stations rompetrom, omv, luk, all take credit cards safe with chip and pin card the small ones have poor quality fuel. the big stations have 95. 98. 100 octane fuel. do not let the pump attendant fill the tank they are so retarded they will scratch the tank with the nosel and press the trigger so the fuel slashes back and covers your bike in petrol so chance of your bike going up i flames.

currency/cash:
use the credit card for fuel. don't buy lie at the exchange shops just use the cash points/ATM find them at most petrol stations, your credit card company will charge you a commission but you have to be careful most exchange shops are okay but as a foreigner you my get f... on commission

roads:
forgot to tell you about the road makings the white lines are painted on the road do not break or accelerate on them they are slippy as hell and you can drop the bike.

safety:
you will see girls on the side of the road wanting a lift. they not wanting a lift there prostitutes so be careful they have a Gypsy man in the bushes ready to rob you.

food & beverage:
don't know you budget but water and juices are more expensive at the petrol station stop at a little shop and buy 2ltr bottle same price a half litre at the petrol station. everything else pay in lie food hotels etc.

Hi, in Romania there seems to be a real culture of rough camping, i would be happy to camp there particularly in the mountains. It is also an excellent country for trail riding and definately one of the most beautiful. I would also recommend Bulgaria especially the SW. Andy B
