Places Not Safe To Go To Now - Somalia

Somalia's interim government closes all land, air and sea borders due to a war which is going on between them and Ethiopia.

Actually this could be a good FORUM topic!!....

Unsafe Routes and Countries ....

What do you think Grant ?

Nigel Marx 19 Mar 2007 06:17

Hi there. These things change so often that I think the section of the HUBB is set up to do just that OK. Personally I think it's easiest for people to put the countries they are thinking of in the topic. But anyone who thinks there's a better way, chime in with it. Always interested.

Travellers' Advisories, Safety and Security on the Road

I think that the "Travellers' Advisories, Safety and Security on the Road" section of the HUBB is the right place for info like this.
If you make a seperate topic for every little thing, it will be much harder to find what you are looking for.

This is a very subjective topic because what one person thinks is safe or unsafe may be quite different to someone else. I have a good friend from Germany who now lives in Bogata yet most Europeans would immediately think of Bogata as a very unsafe place - he think's it's a great place.
Clearly the changing political situation in some countries needs monitoring closely. Another freind visited Beirut last year - two weeks later the Israeli's were bombing the place to hell and most of the areas she had visited and really enjoyed the hospitality and atmopshere were smashed to rubble. She thought it was safe at that time.....
Keep the info coming in by all means but best is to check just prior to heading into a region where you have some doubts. A quick posting on this forum should see you getting some current and relevant feedback from people in the area or who have perhaps just travelled through.

Was in Kismaayo in the south of Somalia in 93 as a contractor for UNOSOM. There are many places in the world I would like to re-visit. Somalia is not one of them.

Somalia And Ogaden

I drove all over both in the 1950s. Both have always been dangerous. In my day those who shot at you did so with old Ross rifles and probably the wrong guage amunition and very little of it. Now everyone and their kid brother has a Kalashnikov or a M16 and unlimited amunition. No, not a good place to travel Though I did once see an old lady trying to feed my Landrover fresh grass she had cut on the bank of the Wabi Shabeele River. Add to which you will be offered camel milk. The milk may be warm and fresh, cool and fresh, sower, almost solid - the one certainty is that there will be flies floating on the surface. Very bad manners to refuse!

I was in Somalia two weeks ago (without a motorcycle) as part of my professional work, which is aviation safety.

I most sincerely recommend that everyone here on the forum avoid Somalia for the time being. It would not be safe, pleasant, or enjoyable to go through the country as a visitor (a tourist). The people there can be very nice, but there are just too many issues right now, most of them related to "I'm in charge here" - "No you're not, I am" - "Oh yeah? Wanna bet?" and from that point on, the fur starts flying.

PanEuropean what part did you travel to? puntland at all?
cheers
