Pakistan now

Hi

We're in Gilgit at the moment and are haeding down to Islamabad in a few days, where some of our stuff is stored.
Things can change suddenly, I guess, but the situation seems quit stable at the moment and the Pakistanis are pretty relaxed. As I see it there's only more police and military in the street and as a foreigner you're not at greater risk as one week ago. Just stay away from large demostrations etc.
I have to say though, that things in the north can be a lot more quiet than the south, so maybe people down there will tell you something different. But since this is a local battle, I really don't think you need to worry too much as a tourist...
In short: you'll be ok. There's loads of travellers in Pakistan at the moment and I haven't heard of any trouble.

Safe travels... Simon

Only glad to help :)
We arrived in Islamabad today and things seem pretty quiet. Bhutto calls to big demonstrations in Rawalpindi Friday, so maybe one should stay away from there though. Hope you have a safe trip through and you only headache will be the :censored: policeescorts. And enjoy Iran - its the best!

Pakistan

Hi all
I went through Pakistan last week with No problem except for having to stay on the main road and a few army escorts, Great place great people, you can read my blog for more info

the Police are only there to help and make sure your safe, they took 3 attempts to stop us at one stage as we kept waving back and driving on, it turned out we were going right into a tribal area where there was fighting going on.
Ride on

Hi Andy/Karen.

Guess we're a bit ahead of you still. Sitting in Agra at the moment and will head south when Stephans stomach is being more nice to him...
What is Islamabad and North Pakistan like at the moment? The media has of course lost interest long ago, so we haven't heard anything since we crossed the border.

Does anyone have anymore up to date info as I am now in Iran heading steadily towards the Pakistan border and I am hearing reports of travellers (in a car) being shot at and held hostage only 7 weeks ago.

Anyone know if I can fly from Tebriz to India somehow?

pecha72 2 Dec 2007 09:13

We also kept hearing many bad stories about Pakistan. Usually from people who'd been reading the news I guess! Luckily we met some bikers just coming from there, and their info was altogether much more positive.

Sure, there are some areas where you'd better not go, but the friendly police will take care that you wont. We had very few escorts anywhere in Pakistan, and even the ones we had, seemed to work pretty smooth, so no big delays because of them. Cannot say the same about southeast Iran, where it started to take hours and days to get anywhere (after Bam). That area, it seems, is a whole lot more dangerous than the main routes in Pakistan, because of drug trafficking.

But being safe also depends on your own actions, like being alert when riding, dont ride in the dark, take care of your valuables and dont show them too much, arrange a good place to keep your bike, dont walk alone after dark, etc. If doing so, then going thru Pakistan, following the main routes, should be fine. At least for us, the only real problem was a bad stomach upset.

Greetings from Quetta arrived yesterday...
From Kerman, Iran police escort to outside town then no escort till
just outside Zahedan then just into town, but both a pain in the arse
both took well over a hour, left Zahedan next morning before escort
arrived. Then to border and into Taftan Pakistan no escort the whole way to Quetta.

Road from Taftan to Quetta, do it in two days I stayed in Dalbandin the
night, hotel on right go into town. From Taftan to Dalbandin
good road but from Dalbandin to Quetta crap. I did it in the middle of
a sandstorm, believe me a some stages I would have loved a police
escort very lonely road.

ride safe
