Pakistan Quetta - Multan

We took the road down south to Sibi, Sukkur. Then headed towards Bahwalpur and Multan. We were 24 h under police protection. They have order to secure foreigners after what happened in the Merrietts in Islamabad. Our problem was, that they keep you away from other pakistanis and it is not the nicest way of travelling. Better to take the way over Ziarat, even when the last 100km the road is under construction!! Good luck!

What happened here?

LATER: Oh, I see. Hadn't heard this story but according to reports, explosion was caused by short circuit?

The past few days I traveled from Quetta to Islamabad, also under 24h police protection from Sukkur onwards. From Quetta to Sukkur I didn't have the escort and I had no problems: people are not dangerous there. In Sukkur I asked directions to a police officer and that's how they 'caught' me. I joined up with an italian couple traveling by car, and they were under protection from Sibi to Lahore (also via Sukkur).

We didn't like the fact that they kept us away from the locals, but we certainly hated their driving speed: usually max. 70 km/h on good empty roads! I drove at night twice because they were so slow, while I could have made it in daylight easily. The second time there were dunes on the road but I couldn't see them because of the darkness and the police in front of me: I nearly crashed a few times! 'For my safety', sure!

cheers,
Peter
