Pakistan KKH (Karakorum Highway) - security?

We are planning to ride Karakorum Highway Islamabad - Gilgit - across in to China in September/October. Is anyone there now? Travel advice from various sources is inconsistent and official sites have turned negative recently. Any current/recent experience would be much appreciated.

Friendly people, stunning scenery and a great ride.
We went through Nov '03 - nothing but smiles and waves - enjoy.

Back from Pakistan / KKH - a fantastic ride, no major hassles. We were 'given' a friendly police escort around Gilgit, they were friendly , entertaining. Coming through Kohistan the people appeared less welcoming - we did not stop. A few stones thown by kids. The Road on the Chinese side (Khunjerab-Kara Kul) is under major repair, most of the tarmac has been removed, much of the route is 'off road' - BillJ

Just back from that area, alas not by bike..
Very friendly people, but Gilgit is not advisable (last month anyhow), just drive past and carry on up the road...

Re Gilgit:
We visited on the way up and back. Wandered around town easily day and night the first time. Clear evidence of police tension (that means large machine guns) the second but were were not prevented from reaching the town, perhaps because we went in the back way (from KKH, North of the main junction).

Billj,

I'm curious: how did you manage to enter China with your bike?
