Missing rider

Hello, our son (Geoff) is currently on an independent motorcycle trip to central and South America.

He was to meet up with a rider named "Wayne" who is from British Columbia. We believe they were supposed to meet in Columbia near the Panama border. From our son's website blog (journeyrider.com), we discovered that Wayne is doing his trip as a HorizonsUnlimited traveler.

We have not heard from our son in ten days and are concerned about his safety. Could you please pass this message along to Wayne if you could, and give him our email address. It would be very helpful to know where our son intended to meet up with Wayne and his traveling partner, Mike. Our phone number is: (515)251-4105.

Thank you for any help you can provide and if it is possible to get this message out to your rider's in the region, we would greatly appreciate whatever information they can pass along. Best regards,

Peggy and Randie Tayner rptayner Atttt mchsi doooottttt comm

Colon, Panama

I checked your son's website, and he has followed the same trail I followed and possibly ended up in the same place. Your son's weblog describes Colon very accurately.

I went to the Shipping Office in Colon Panama. Check here first and see if they have a "record" of your son "possibly" finding a boat that will ship his bike and himself. There will be no written record but someone there will remember. The top guys will be honest, they are on good government salaries, and will tell you.

About two hundred meters from the centre of town there is a dock for small boats. The guys that run out of there (to my disdain I didn't find this out until I was aboard one of these boats) run contraband into Colombia. I paid for passage to Cartagena, but got "dropped off" in Monito near the Darien Gap. I can possibly find my boat receipt for the name of the boat, and photos of the Captain and a german guy who calls himself Andre (runs 50% of the contraband) if your investigations point toward this being what happened.

The German guy got me in piles of trouble in Colombia by politicking among some unsavoury characters and trying to extort money from me. (German guy not a Colombian). He had told me a story on the boat about he used to be a lawyer in Germany and about how he had been married 11 years, met his wife 13 years ago and she was now having her 24th Birthday. Do the math on this pig. Also stated his real name was not Andre but would not say what it was.

It is unlikely, but just in case, if any information points toward this route please let me know and I will give you as much info as I can scramble up.

If you find the lad, please post so we can set our minds at ease. I think I speak for all travellers when I say we all feel terribly moved when we see a MP posting.

Best wishes
Chris

Glad your ok fella...

I told my friends and family not to worry about me until they heard nothing for at least 6 weeks.

They all wanted me to phone or email at least once a week which I thought was unpractical and crazy.

There are times where you cant get phone or internet or just dont want to be connected to "home".

When you know people are expecting you to call on a deadlline, it just stresses you out trying to find a way of communication, which could lead to an accident in itself.

Glad your ok though. Too many people going missing at the moment

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
