Africa

We are in Kenya now the situation in the North at this time is fine, there was an incident a few weeks ago where a Frenchman was injured in an attempted hold up, however the vehicle he was driving screamed money. So don't go to flashy, we came down thru Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia & Kenya late last year, as for Egypt....well Egypt is Egypt ! Sudan you will not meet nicer people than you will encounter in Sudan (your route thru the North is very safe) Ethiopia is such a lovely country a few kids throe stones (just wave at them and they soon drop them) however a few people get intimidated by this and make an issue of it. But you journey thru that country will be memorable for all the right reasons. As for the bandit highway Isiolo to Marsibit to Mayole, its ok but caution should be taken also you usually meet others doing this trip at the same time. If you stay here at Jungle Junction you will meet people who are going your way & if you don't just wait a day and you soon will. You are in for a very rewarding & exciting trip.
Good Luck

Thank you for update. And all the borders are open ? Acording to local newspapers there is an unrest in Sudan right now and the country has splited into 2 countries - are the borders between them open ? Isn't there any fight ?

About that Marsibi to Mayole - do you think it will be enough to go in a group or it would be better to rent some armed escort ?

Thank you

I would not worry too much about marsabit. Take it easy and make a rest at the swiss campingplace GPS N02°20'44.4" E037°57'56.6"

In Marsabit there is a petrol station as well so dont carry to much petrol like i did.

Of course in marsabit there have been some trouble lately:

but this can hapen in other places of africa as well. Just dont stay for too long and dont look too fancy.

Enjoy africa, Tobi

Hi
I am Nadine, the girlfriend of the man that was injured in this incident. As we are travelling with a quite new Toyota equipped for travelling, I can imagine that our car looks very valuable. But don't think it was against us because we were not the only people attacked this day on this road : we know at least another vehicule of local people that was stopped by the bandits. I suppose that, as they are english or local native speakers, they managed to understand themselves so they succeeded in calming the situation. Finally, they were beaten and stolen. Unfortunatly, it was not our case, so we didn't have another choice to escape and then risk to be shot and that what happened.

My opinion is that, like in other places in Africa, these kind of guys stop and try to rob every vehicle at a moment in a special place, in french we call them "coupeurs de route". And people we met after in Laisamis told us it happens regularly between Isiolo and Marsabit, so it is better to ask the police station in these cities and if necessary askfor an armed escort or at least organize a convoy.
Even if I know people that came that road alone without any problem : just a matter of wrong time, wrong place !

Nadine,
