Exclamation Karakorum Highway blocked by landslide

A massive landslide has blocked the Hunza River North of Gilgit. A lake has formed which has submerged the KKH and several villages.

Another landslide plunges Attabad lake to danger zone – The Express Tribune

Collapse of the dam is apparently imminent and many people downstream have been evacuated. For anybody in Pakistan:

==> Stay out of the Indus valley and off the KKH.

Dr David Petley’s report on the Attabad landslide lake says the Tarbela dam further downstream may breach.

I thought is very old news already. :confused1:

I've been waiting for opening about two months on the road, lets hope the blow doesn't wash the road completely away and it is still repairable in this season...

Ride safe, Margus

You are right, the landslide happened in January, but I can't see any announcement here, so I thought I'd put one up.

Also, it's very dangerous right now if you are anywhere downstream from the blockage, and that includes the entire Indus valley, in case the Tarbela dam breaks.

Exclamation

The lake has now started to spill over, but the level is still rising at 50 cm / day. A breach can occur at any moment and people below are advised to evacuate:

I read on DP's blog that the lake has stabilised for the moment and they have resumed the boat service so maybe you can get though on a light moto.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
