I am thinking about riding to Icelnd, July/Aug 2009, I would love to ride offroad as much as possible. I have just purchased Globeriders dvd from NEC Bike show. I am sure there is information on this site if I look for it, but any pic, advice etc would be great.

1) Ferry from Scotland return.
2) what bike is best? may need to buy smaller bike for this trip,1200gsa - just too heavy for river crossing etc.
3) Wild camping as much as possible.
4) Fuel, how easy is it to get fuel?
5) Etc, etc, etc.

As you will see the ferry isn't calling at Scrabster on the 2009 schedule, bummer!

It's been a while ago when I was there (on a push bike ;-) but I'll try to answer a few questions:

2) Yep, a small enduro would be he perfect choice IMO. Sometimes the river crossings are a bastard. Big boulders, strong current - and bloody cold.
3) Absolutely. I enjoyed the solitude. But be aware that the normal breeze there is like our autumn storms :eek3: So a good tent is as important as finding a sheltered spot.
4) No probs. I saw fuel stations in the middle of nowhere and inside is often a small shop.
5) Don't miss any hot springs on your way. It's like stopping at a pub. This is where people socialize :DYou'll see what I mean ;-)

It depends on what you would like to do.

IMHO the inland north of Vatnajøkul is the best part. (Askja, F910, old F910, Laugafell all roads leading to Laugafell etc). Unless something has changed it’s not easy to get fuel in this area and I felt that 450 km range was a limiting factor. We had to leave the area to get fuel a few times. Lovely place, I would like to go back.

If you meet a river you are not able to cross (wait to next morning if there is too much water) you might have to backtrack and it makes everything easier if you have enough petrol. Luckily you don’t have to carry loads of water, but you will need some food!

In other parts of Iceland fuel is often easier to find.

my partner and myself spent 4 weeks this year mostly offroad in iceland. i was thinking it may be a bit lacking in adventure. how bloody wrong can you be. the riding was more challenging than anything we found in sth america and we had a fantastic time. i have lots of info, too much to write down (im a bloody lazy typist) would be happy to tell you more if you think it could help. give me a call on 01539 728567 kendal . will be around after new year.
