Update on Ian Coates' Travels Around the World.......

Hello Everyone...... For all of you who have been keeping up with Ian Coates' travels around the world, I just received an email from him and he would like me to post this for him.

From Ian Coates - Wednesday, April 28, 2010:

DEE, CAN YOU PUT THIS IN FOR ME PLEASE .
I AM STILL WAITING FOR MY MOTOR BIKE TO GET TO VLADIVOSTOK BY SEA FROM SEATTLE, USA. I GOT HEAR ON THE 16-4-2010, MY BIKE SHOULD HAVE GOT HERE THE SAME DAY BUT THE SHIPPERS SAID IT NOW WOULD GET HERE ON THE 21-4-2010. ON THE 21-4-2010 THEY SAID IT WILL NOW GET HERE ON THE 27-4-2010. ON THE 27-4-2010 THEY SAID IT WOULD GET HERE ON THE 30-4-2010. I DO NOT THINK THEY KNOW WHERE THE SHIP IS AND WHEN IT WILL GET HERE, IT IS A RUSSIAN SHIP . IT WILL GET HERE WHEN IT GETS HERE. I HAVE BEEN ON THE RUSSIAN TV HERE ON MONDAY AND AGAIN ON TUESDAY AND BEEN INVITED TO A BIG BIKE RALLY HERE ON SUNDAY, ITS A 2 DAY RALLY . I AM STILL SLEEPING ON THE FLOOR OF THE IRON TIGERS MOTOR BIKE CLUB AND GARAGE, THEY CALL IT THE BOX. IT IS A LOT BETTER THAN MY TENT AND IT IS DRY . THEY ARE LOOKING AFTER ME VERY WELL AND I AM MEETING LOTS OF BIKERS. ITS BEEN VERY COLD HERE AND SNOWED LAST WEEK. NOW COLD AND WET BUT THATS OK I AM IN THE BOX .

We have been hanging out with Ian all week while my bike has been fixed at the Iron Tigers headquarters. Great guy!
Spoke to him today at the Open Day bike rally. He is having major problems getting his bike into Russia. It has arrived, but Vlad customs will not release any of his gear. They are happy for him to have his bike, but everything else in his crate, including his helmet, tent and front wheel (as this was not actually attached to his bike) has been labelled "contraband" and they are saying it must be confiscated. He's going back on Tuesday to negotiate with them, but is having to think about shipping his bike to Korea or somewhere else, and then bringing it in again. I'm sure he would appreciate any advice people are able to give him.
Cheers

japan?

has he thought about shipping into Japan and then once in there leaving from Fushiki to Vladivostock by ferry?
its not necessary to have a carnet when entering Japan - they definitely prefer it - but it is poss without.

we found entering japan no hasstle and leaving via the ferry extremely easy. all details of the ferry GPS co-ords for the offices etc...can be found on our website here: 2ridetheworld.com : diary

hope this provides some ideas......
cheers

Ian's farm stay

Ian came back to our farm in east-central Alberta after he had shipped his bike to Russia but was still waiting for his Russian visa. He was up bright and early in the morning and out to welcome the newborn calves. The rest of the day Ian could be found working in the shop helping to get the machinery ready for the planting season. He no sooner had made the statement that he had not had a cold for many many years and I noticed his voice disappearing. Well did he ever have a bad one and thank goodness he was here and was able to nurse himself back to health. Heres hoping for another 30 years of immunity Ian.
I have just returned from a month of motorcycling around India on Royal Enfields. You can all imagine the stories each evening around the dinner table with Ian's experiences. Now he reckons why not China and India. Actually plans are in the works to join him in China.

Thumbs up

hi,

me and my motorbikefriend Martin have seen Ian Coates at the Bike-Festival in Kemerovo/Russia (18.06.2010-20.06.2010)
Now he should be in Omsk to get his Visa for Kasachstan.
Actually he is on the Way to visit the "stan" countrys.
He thought, he would be in Germany in September this year; later than back at home

greetings
volker
PS: later I will post a photo from this Meeting with Ian

Now that is what I call adventure riding. At sixty years of age I have been debating the wisdom of an extended trip. Ian certainly is an inspiration.

Ian wrote me an Email few days ago.
May be (and i hope so) he would be in Germany at the end of Octobre.

If anybody see him, then pick him up and drive with him to the meeting in Germany this Autumn.
This would be great.

Cheers

hi volker

hi volker,

thank you for posting this here, I expected Ian to stay in Ukraine until next year ... but the summer is over now and maybe he wants to be next to his own heater for the winter, or he joins us on the boat to Brazil in the end of November.

this means also that I could meet him in the UK in October or November, good news ...

greetings from a wet campsite in Berlin

mika

Hey Dan:

I guess you have missed him. He showed up today near Burgas, Bulgaria.
He is having some small problem with the bike, but nothing critical.

He will be heading to Turkey after he fix his bike. But from what I am reading about him it might be some time before he leaves ;-)
