Theft insurance for Russia & Stans
 

Good day,

I have for some time now tried to find a theft insurance for my bike which would be valid in Russia and the Stans. Unfortunately without success.

Can anybody tell me if it is at all possible to get such an insurance and where I could get it. Many thanks.

PS. My bike is registered in South Korea.

It was overkill but I bought a 9 meter 10mm think stainless cable that you might be able to see on the left pannier and an alarmed padlock.

When camping it was threaded through the rack, rear wheel, chassis and pillion grip and locked with an Oxford alarm boss (?) padlock with a tape cover bike cover. The bike was also parked next to the tent (out of falling range). The panniers were in the tent with us at night. If we left the bike at a camp-site while using public transport we would lock the panniers on the bike, thread the cable through the pannier handles and through the bike as above.

When parked in a city or some where we could not see it we would thread the cable through everything as above but also to something like a telephone poll or other serious object. We occasionally left our jackets with the helmets on the bike which was also threaded with the cable.

We also had a packsafe 55 (stainless mesh with a drawstring type wire) which held the tent on top of the topbox. That's the blue thing on the top box in the photo.

The tank bag had a valuable electronics and paper work. That came with us everywhere.

As others have said all this would not stop a determined thief but prob would make them think twice and prob move on to something better than a dirty looking 1995 Yamaha diversion..The photo is at the start of that trip so still pretty clean. Insurance or not the bike going missing would ruin a trip.

In Europa i just park it thats all. In Africa i usuarly take everything valuable of of the boxes. People there are usuarly not interesdet in big bikes. Onely tourist do have them but they want your camera etc.

I pferere wildcamping beside my bike. Onely if i have to use a hote i lock the bike with a chain onto something so noone can carry it away.

If i stop for a restaurant or an embassy or at the border i choose a place where i can watch the bike so noone can take my tent of etc.

Like everybody else, I always parked inside hotels - usually in a courtyard -
I never let the bike out of my sight, and you can get away with parking the bike in some odd places in much of the world!

I always used my Pacsafe at borders. I made some DIY cables with loops at either end to wrap my panniers parcel-style. More of a visual deterrent. Just enough to prevent a snatch n' grab. Canada to Panama, never had a single thing stolen.

If I leave the bike I either lock everything down properly or it is in view with shiny flashy things out of sight.

Overnight I usually used hotels and the first thing I asked about was "do you have secure parking?"

I never had a chain, nor a disc lock or an alarm

I was always worried about the bike security, so this meant I was never complacent, and the worry was not a worry if you get my drift, it was just a natural part of the journey and it became second nature.

I also paid a local chap at the border crossings a few 'whatevers' to keep an eye on it, this service was usually offered anyway and I just had to decide which one to give the last of my change to, I never had any problems occur doing that.
