First trip, Sth Africa

Hi, I have just found this site and as yet I have not had a good look around, but I have a burning question to get out of the way first.
A mate and I are planning a 4 week trip flying from Australia to Cape Town and riding up through Namibia and back down through Botswana through Swaziland and Lostho to Cape Town on hired BMW650's.

Does anyone have suggestions, tips, and /or cautions for us?

Bushy and I are both capable off road riders, navigators and ride organisers.
I have a copy of Lonley Planet and have read about the countries we will visit but first hand info is better. If any one can help it would be great.

Thanks in advance.
Colin.

PS now to look around this site, and maybe get lost.

You can read about my trip in South Africa and Lesotho on my website Jan Krijtenburg homepage (Travel pages)

Great country for bikers.
On my next trip I also want to go to Namibia and Botswana.
Do you make a weblog/tripreport ?

Great countries! Riding up to the Kaokoveld to Opuwo isn't too difficult, but west and north-west fom there terrain gets more and more difficult, albeit very rewarding. What few people visit is the west rim of Fish River canyon. There is a beautiful lodge situated right on the canyon rim about 100 km south of the road going to Luderitz.

Lesotho is lovely - very rugged. So different from Oz. The rides I enjoyed there most were from Butha-Buthe past Katse Dam south-eastwards, the trip along the eastern border (don't miss Sani Pass), the central road going east-west, the ride from Quachas Neck to Tele Bridge.

Namibia plus this will probably be more than enough for four weeks. But if time is left, the area just south of Lesotho in the Eastern Cape is brilliant as well (Naude's Neck Pass) or further in the direction of Cape Town the Swartberg Pass with a detour into the De Hel valley.

Enjoy!
Hans

Cpt Nemo, visit this site, you will get what you need fast and people will help where they can. It's the local dualsport site in SA, there's also plenty of ride reports to help you out.
