el slavador- nicaragua ferry???

hi, any latest information about driving through hondouras, on the way to tierra del feugo, as we plan to be there by late september?, my friend from guatemala said there is a ferry on the golfo de fonseca, from el slavador to nicaragua, but that is not confirmed? thanks a lot, eric

Do contact your friend in Guatemala again to see if he can get more detail

Personally I have never heard of any kind of ferry service from ES to NIC, the amount of traffic to support it is just not there ,I think. There may well be a freight shipping line from La Union ES for certain cargo across this short stretch of ocean , but again demand is probably limited and would take much red tape and time for bikes if it actually exists.
If you are planning to cross this part of Honduras in late September I suggest you do it by way of the Pan- american highway. The political protests ,probably overstated in the press ,seem mostly sporadic outbursts at the large cities, and the Pan-am goes nowhere near Tegucigalpa or San Pero Sula. By end of next month the situation may be resolved as they prepare to elect a new president as was scheduled already before this storm blew up. Read the news and assess the situation daily a s you travel. Stay well away from areas where you know protests are going on.
Even without this latest tiff it is common for protest marches to spring up whether in Mexico or the CA - 4. If you come to such a protest road block be calm and polite and comiserate with them but refrain from expressing your favouritism to ANY party or argument . Do NOT take sides, it is not your problem. After some waiting and friendly banter they will usually permit the tourist motorcyclist to pass their barricades and to proceed. . If things do take an unsolvable turn retrace your steps to the nearest town and spend the night and try again early next morning before the protesters regroup.

gulf of fonseca

I was on the Nicaraguan side of the gulf about two years ago and inquired about boats and ferries and was told there were none.

I'm currently in Granada, Nicaragua. I rode across Honduras (CA-1) on Monday, the same day the deposed president showed up back in the country. The border crossings were, apparently, no different than usual. I crossed the Honduras and Nicaragua borders on the same day, its only about two hours to get across Honduras. I have heard the airports in Honduras are closed, but the borders still open for vehicle traffic (Sept 23).

Just about to cross Honduran borders

thanks for the update on the borders in Honduras. We will go today and see where things are at. Travelling on US plates on the bike, hopefully we dont get too much hassle.
Cheers Jules & Olie

Honduras a breeze

We crossed through Honduras yesterday. There were absolutely no signs of any political unrest except we "think" we saw one small political rally way out in the country in a field.

The borders were totally normal, so was the capital. We barely even saw any military.

When we asked locals at gas stations or resturants about the curfew, they mostly just laughed it off as if to say "who cares".
