I'd strongly recommend Richard Grant's book 'Bandit Roads'.. as a very good read.. and as an introduction to that part of the world.. perhaps the bits you don't always see from the saddle of a bike:

Travellers Advisories and safety
Shot are fired back and forth.Be aware of the creel I just want to advice all the travellers to maintain their safety.Let them be away from the borders as much as they can.
