I was 2 years ago. I can recommend. Very interesting country for bike travelling.

Bulgaria- I was there last summer - no problems at all- but don't get caught speeding by hidden cops.

Romania - watch out for BIG holes in the road. I saw one I could lose the bike in. Also many smaller holes and railway tracks crossing the road but protruding by 10 centimetres sometimes. Dont hit this at an angle or at speed. Dont travel in the dark. Be careful when wild camping - dont let anyone see you put up your tent. The country is pisspoor and some will want your gear. There is a big queue at the border with Hungary (Nagylak)- just go to the front of the q and present your papers. There is a much less busy border nearby but I forget its name. A Romanian guy told me this. About 5 kilometres before Nagylak on the Hungarian side there is a very very nice campsite. I forget the name but its the only one and there are adverts for it beside the road to the border.

I rode a Harley through Bulgaria this past summer with no problems. The roads are not very well maintained most are single lane with horse carts and that. Bulgaria was a fun part of my trip from New Mexico to Israel and back. The people where great. Go and have fun.

Haven't been on a bike through Romania or Bulgaria, but I spent about 3 weeks in each country backpacking in Fall 04. If you visit Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo is a beautiful little town. I highly recommend the Hiker's Hostel, and they have a fenced in yard to keep your bike. The best part about the town is a place called, "Pizza and Pasta". It has 2 menus, each of 15 pages or so. Excellent food, and very reasonably priced. I ended up extending my stay by a couple days just to explore more of the menu. The Rila Monestary is another very picturesque area and worth the trip. I never experienced any security issues in either Country. That includes walking through the streets of Bucharest at 3am. If you want any other info, feel free to send me an email.
