Bolivia to Peru border advice needed
I am going to buy a motorbike in Sucre in a few weeks and expect to take it into Peru, and then on to Ecuador and Colombia.

Can anyone advise me as to what to expect when crossing the border of Bolivias/Peru with a motorbike?

The Copacabana crossing there is quite corrupt, at worst you may have to pay $10-$15 as a bribe (I paid $10 in 2009 to enter on a power of attorney and with no insurance).

What's the deal with buying a bike in Sucre? Already have one lined up? If you're buying second hand you should know that they've changed a few laws lately and it takes a little longer to transfer the paperwork, though you can ride around Bolivia whilst waiting for it to process which is cool, best country for it in my opinion.

When you get here I'll show you some nice trails in the mountains before you hit the road if you want

Thanks for answering. The main reason I'm buying in Sucre is because it looks like a good place to stay for a while and make a careful decision. I know that Santa Cruz may have a better selection and price, but ten days was enough.

I'd like to buy a new Chinese piece of crap, a 250--something that'll hold up far enough to get me to Colombia, and that I can sell or dump when I'm done and not take a huge loss. I've been told $1350 should tsake care of everything...

Reasoning based on bits and pieces of information and guesswork. Maybe I'm crazy; if you know better, I'm all ears. I'll be in Sucre today (Sat.) and hope to go next to Potosi, Chocha, La Paz then to Peru.

Cool, well $1350 is enough to buy a China bike for sure, there's some vendors on ave Jaime Mendoza, Guillermo (near the bus terminal) and a couple more behind the stadium. They'll probably be closed now until Monday though.

If you want I can show you where they are on Monday, just let me know if you do.

My flight from Santa Cruz was cancelled Saturday, and I am hoping to get out today, Sunday. As soon as I get settled in Sucre, I would like to take you up on your offer to show me the motorcycle shops.

Of course, it's just these type of travel problems that make me want a motorcycle. I don't even care to fly, necessarily, and far prefer to go slowly then quickly.

Again, thanks a lot for your help yesterday, you do have to let me take you out for dinner or something--you know Sucre better than I, of course, so I'm up for anything.

Tried to e-mail you but couldn't connect. I have MUWANY@gmail.com. I tried it both in caps and not, but both were returned. I have left out the first two characters so that you're not "compromised" on this site. Nothing urgent of course, will try again (as I typed this in, it highlighted--so maybe it's OK after all. My connection here at Al Tronco is poor.

Today I'm going to go back to the last place we went to yesterday and then the place with the big black bike for $1900 and test ride.

It would be nice to meet the fellow American you spoke of, and learn more about the homestay.

Went back tothe long marketstreet you pointed out yesterday and bought some warm clothing--again, thanks for the info.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
