Egypt - Cairo emergency bike parking

I avail my garden in the center of Cairo to anyone stuck in Egypt at the moment who would wish to fly out for the next couple of weeks and hide their bike during these difficult times, until first week of May maximum as I'll be leaving the flat by then. It is too early to say how long the actual stand off will last and in which direction it will evolve. The place is relatively safe and hidden, it's where I park my KTM. I can also momentarily accommodate with a comfortable guest room with shower. This offer is valid until I put myself to safety in another country, possibly next week or the following. PM if interested, first come first helped. Be safe! /C

Thanks.
Same honest and friendly offer from our club to those who are on the way to middle east countries but still in İstanbul and desire to give a break until situation is clear.

You can park your motors in our closed garage in istanbul just 12 km. far from istanbul atatürk airport, or ask for other helps we can do. All free from İstanbul
Adventure Riders Club.

Hope you passed the last week in Cairo well

Based on your offer to garage bikes in Cairo, I am hoping that you can help me out with an Egyptian insurance question. I am shipping my bike to Egypt now. The bike (and I) will be in country for the next few years. I would really appreciate any advice you can offer on where to insure the bike and how much to insure it for. I understand if the bike is stolen or totaled, I may have to come up with the value of the bike, plus taxes. Thanks for your help.

many options available

Hi, welcome to the HUBB!

There are threads dealing more directly with insurance issues, but since you ask here, I answer here as well. Please browse the HUBB for details.

You'll have plenty of options as regards to insurance, they're all there selling the best coverage in the world. Third party insurance is mandatory and added to licensing fees you'll have to pay, expect roughly 200 USD a year the moment, and a couple of days lost with the Cairo Traffic Authority, subject to unforeseen and unforeseeable change. Great difficulties ahead should you have to claim anything. As for theft insurance or alike, I personally have made a choice a long time ago not to be stolen by insurance companies and/or brokers on a daily basis, but eventually accept that one day I may have to pay with a larger personal loss for having failed to protect my own assets. So far so good. Egypt is by no mean a place where one has to worry excessively about a possible theft.

I see on your profile that you own a HD Road King, if this is the bike you wish to import and ride around here, I'd invite you to reflect on it a little further. I'd recommend something more versatile to enjoy the desert, and "not so painful to damage". Expect to pay 10% duty on brand-new purchase cost when importing, as a minimum. There's a HD dealer here, you may want to contact them and inquire for insurance details, see: Harley-Davidson Egypt | Harley | H-D | Cairo | Egypt | New | Used | Bikes | Test Rides | Servicing | Fat Boy

Good luck in your preparation, one advice only: brace yourself with patience!
/C

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
