tie down straps
I got this one from Bruno Blum at the Horizons meeting in B.C. last year. Strap a tie down strap around your pannier and the frame behind it vertically. This adds a safety so if your mounting comes loose, the box doesn't disappear. Also is a handy place to store the strap to tie down the bike on ferries or trucks if broken down.
