Home made sun visor for helmet

I use a peaked motorcross style helmet a lot, so when I go back to a normal full face with just the face shield, I miss the peak at certain times of the day, because it keeps the brightness and the sun out of my eyes and off my face.

Bit of thinking and ta da...impromtu sun visor.
Use two or three strips of black electrical tape, stick it along the top of the face shield. One strip just overlaying the one above.
I use three strips, from one side of the face shield to the other.
When I pull the visor down the black tape shades my face and keeps overhead glare out of my eyes.
The strips do not affect your line of sight unless you are bent low over a sports bike or tend to ride along watching the overhead sky for UFO's or circling vultures.
If you need to change the strips or want to remove and then clean the sticky residue off the visor, simply rub with eucalyptus oil. Cleans sticky residue great.

Absolutely agree about peaks.Tried tape,tried a mini peak fixed to the visor,there's no substitute for a vented fixed peak.Keeps you alive in low sun(and bastards with full headlights) and the visor stays unscratched - in the case of my(OK,Nolan)lid the visor is some 7 years old.My Arai(which I gave away)needed a new visor every 6 months,the last month or so being more frosted than clear so cost apart the danger aspect did it for me.It's brilliant whacking round a climbing bend in autumn(fall) or spring(spring) to blast past everyone else as they desperately scrabble for the brakes!
Stick to your old crosser lid as long as the peak's vented,for your neck's sake!

Just had a thought, wonder how window tinting would go instead of electrical tape? Might give it a try, should be able to pick up some leftover bits from a car tinting shop pretty easily

Tinting,like tape,will reduce sun glare but wont shade the visor itself which tends to opaque with the sun on it.Go on,try a peak into the sun - I dare you!

www.rideicon.com A street bike site, appears to sell some sort of tinted strip for the tops of visors, so I don't see why car window tint would not work.

When I'm riding tracks and trails in the bush I always use a helmet with a peak, but on my Ducati Streetfighter, at 120 kph plus, the peak is more of a liability than an asset, hence my taped visor.

Just enjoyed 200 miles at up to 125mph on my VFR with my VENTED peak,no problems(OK,don't listen then,nyaa nyaa)and - at 6'5" I'm well above any fairing effect.......

The RD 1 helmet.
Almost an exact copy of the old Nolan Jetwing.
Was my fave helmet.

Pity the website don't let you order online.

I struggled on winter trips with glare in the eyes and/or headaches. a simple strip of gaffa tape across the top inch of visor, made my life a whole lot better.

I used to do this with my old Arais some 15 years ago... worked a treat.
These days I carry a full tint so don't need to.

I used that trick on my goggles before I had a full face helmet. Justed taped the top of the glass and I could drive East in the morning without being blinded by the low sun.
Simple and very effective.
