second passport

Hi
Anyone want to email off line with any tips on getting a second passport? I'm going to send mine off to the Sudanese Embassy and need to travel in the mean time. Any hints on how to smooth the process?

What do you mean? Are you considering buying a passport from a country like Belize or do you want to get a second one from the same country?

Cheers, Steve

I had originally thought of getting a second UK passport but I am keeping an open mind on the subject, if there is another source/host country then I am open to suggestions.

I think what you are looking for is a duplicate passport. I can tell you how I got one as a US citizen.

I was travelling on a motorcycle in Turkey, and needed to submit my passport for a Syrian visa at the Syrian Consulate in Istanbul, and would have to wait a week or so for them to give back the passport.

Before I left my passport at the Syrian consulate, I went to the US consulate (I'm a US citizen), and asked for a duplicate passport, because I would be applying for Visas while travelling. I was planning on going to Bulgaria while I waited for my Syrian visa to be processed. The US Consulate was fast about having a duplicate passport made. Took one day. The duplicate passport looks a bit odd, but I've used it a bunch of times and never had any problems.

One thing that also might help is a letter from an employer, saying that it is required that you travel for business while at the same time you will need to submitt your passport to apply for visas.

Brit immigration has stopped issuing second passports to individuals unless you have valid business reasons for the application and therefore you must have a letter from your employer supporting your application.

I've been to the British High Commission here in Delhi today because my passport is full but has three years left to run. They told me that I can apply for an renewal and they will issue a second passport (without cancelling my current passport) which will be valid until the present one expires. Costs about £75 and takes five working days.
I realise that may not be much use to you in the UK, but it is possible.

If you were to "lose" your passport or it was "stolen" the UK passport agency will issue another within a week to ten days. This "happened" to me and was not a problem.... the only thing to be aware of is that the original passport is officially cancelled, but how many countries actualy swipe a passport rather than just look at it.

Good luck

them govs
as a german citizen it seems to be quite easy.
My wife and I are applying for 10 visas for Central Asia. To get a second passport valid for a year it takes 13 EUR and one day to pick it up.
To get a second passport valid 5 years it takes 6 weeks and some 30 EUR.
It seems to me the diplomacy of every country is quite different. For us no worries to travel within the EU. Even a Bulgarian or Romanian visa evokes a ??? to us. Although I wouldn´t know about Africa.

I'm applying for a second UK passport at the moment. You have to either be going to "incompatible" countries (such as Israel and an Arab country) or needing to travel while your passport is away for a visa application. Or both.

Plus, as has been mentioned, you have to be travelling for business, not pleasure. If you have no employer you might swing it by saying you are a freelance and getting a letter from a client to verify your occupation and your travel plans. This is what I'm doing and it seems to be working - fingers crossed.

It worked...my two new passports just arrived.

Hi, I got a second passport in the UK before travelling, at first the passport office denied all knowledge of the possibility of getting a second passport, I said that they were lying to me and could I speak to her supervisor, they said it was possible but only if going to mutually hostile countries such as Isreal and say Syria. I then filled out all the forms, got my doctor to sign and paid the money, hey presto second passport, in the end I didn't need to use it but it was usefull non the less. I have also been in the situation of getting a new passport abroad (Singapore) this took one week to issue but they cancelled my old passport which had over 2 years to run but was full. If you say your passport is lost or stollen and try to use it and someone does check it then you could have a bit of a problem.

One of the advantages of coming from Northern Ireland is that you can get a UK passport and an Irish passport. Hopefully an Irish passport will be usefull if I ever travel to a country that the British arent too popular in as Ireland is supposed to be a neutral country

That's true - I think I qualify for a Manx passport in just under 2 years, so that'd sit well with the UK one http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

like those above i just got my second passport (british) today, you have to fill in the passport application again for a new passport, i also attached a letter to it saying i was travelling first to Israel and then into the middle east without returning home, the letter was more detailed than that of course. They dont like to issue 2nd passports they normally ask you in cases such as this that you reknew your passport early, so the phrase best to use when applying (the passport line told me to add this) is 'travel between in-compatible countries'.
