Reserve Scott Oiler

Hi,

What is the best way of store scottoiler fluid? I am sure you cant find it in Middle East. Is the only solution carry about 6-7 liter of it?

Ozhanu, Just use/buy Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) or chain saw bar oil (that's not 2 stroke oil obviously), synthetic or syn fortified in either ATF or bar oil would be better, but standard oil OK if nothing else available or cost of syn oil is too high.

You may need to adjust your scottoiler flow rate if you change oils.

Yea i would agree with Skillo on chinsaw bar oil,and thicker(20w50)engine oil with flow rate adjustment to suit.Think it's supposed to be 2 drips per minute.ATF is way too thin though,especially in the heat you're likely to encounter on your trip.As it's designed as a hydraulic fluid first,and a is really only a good lubricant when pressure-fed it won't do an awful lot on a chain.

Gearbox oils are the go and available everywhere - generally around 85/90w.

JonStobbs, I will defer to others wisdom on this as I cannot say I have ever used ATF, but I have spoken to a few that have and they said it works - how well over long term I don't know. I agree it would likely be too low viscosity in hot climate, but in cold climate ATF may be the only automotive oil thin enough and readily available?

Parkie, I agree gearoil would logically seem like a good choice, but 85/90 is much higher viscosity than scottoil. Thats OK as long as you have enough adjustment range on your oiler. My oil resoivoir is mounted low and I doubt I would have enough adjustment unless it was way hot outside. Oh, and gearoil smells bad, but I guess you do what you gotta do if you have limited choice. Any of these oils on your chain is better than no oil - I think.

Thanks for detailed replies folks.
I think it might be hard to find chansaw oil or ATF in every gas station. The best thing is to use 20w/50 engine oil on my scottoiler. It should be easier to find.
I am planning to go on April, so it wont be so hot I guess.

Currently in Peru, haviing passed thro´Central America where it was hot, and found that using Engine Oil with the adjustment turned right down works just fine on my MZ Baghira - also only one oil to carry!

actually it is what I am thinking, just carrying one oil and use for both, engine and scottoiler.

I used gearoil cause it's nice and sticky and doesn't flick off in a hurry. Had to turn the scottoiler up almost to prime as it is thicker than the scottoil then it did the job nicely.

I thought that Scott Oil was actually ATF with some additives included in the mix...

I have been using ATF in my Scottoiler for a while now and it works fine, although it will flow a bit quicker. And ATF is available everywhere, well at least in the major cities.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
