Priority to the Right law in France
 

For those of you who are not sure or dont know this law exists in France, we have written a blog to explain this. We dont know if this applies to other European countries, perhaps someone on here can advise.

When I worked in Germany I came across a similar thing using a white line. I wondered what it was for quite a few days. Then one morning on the way to the office I had an early morning shock! It was a close one:eek:

There's enough people living in France on here to give us some feedback on how much of a problem priorite a droite is likely to be for UK visitors, but as a "demi resident" it's something I'm aware of but don't come across that often - mainly in backwater rural villages.

In Norway, unless specifically signposted with a red triangle on it's point, the international "give-way" sign, traffic from the right has priority.

You can imagine the terror in a visiting driver when another driver lurches onto a main road from the right, and there is no acceleration lane.

So long as everyone knows this traffic can flow smoothly, but usually the result is panic-braking and yo-yo style of driving.

Did I mention fines for speeding?

There is also another situation where priority to the right occurs in France, and it is usually the one where most accidents happen, due to the location and weight of traffic in a town or city. This is where there are no sign panels or road markings in a town square or market place where a number of roads converge. In the absence of any panels or road markings, priority must be given to the right.

In Denmark we too have to stop for anyone coming from your right, if there are no signs or markings on the road.
There is one more very special case, that even most Danes don't know about:
At a crossing you can have white full lines on the road, where to stop at a red light BUT if the lights aren't working, you must stop for anyone from your right, then the white lines have no significance.

Like in Finland (the Nordic countries have done together some regulatory work even before EU).
