To prevent animals (bears esp) from taking an interest in your tent pack
your food into your boxes. Cook from your boxes and put it all away before you
get into your tent. Also smelly things like toothpaste should not be kept in
your tent.

only problem with this theory is that the nice carebear will now take an unreasonable interest in your bike! better to do as the locals: cook away from everything, 50 meters downwind of your camp and hide it all as high as possible off the branch of a big tree. Pls see pg 201 of Chris Scott's AMH.

Not to sound trite ... here’s a few bare facts about bears from one who lives where bears dine on unsuspecting tourist on a regular bases ... either malling ... eating and killing on average 3 humans a year. Never and I mean never have anything in your tent that will attract what appears to be fuzzy cute poo type creatures large or small. This includes salt to tooth paste and everything in between.

Special care also must be taken in bear country for women who are experiencing that time of month. Leaving items secured in or on your bike offers little or no protection either. The former poster is correct and the curious bear will have no problem in remodeling and customizing your bike. Hanging items high enough from tree limbs might afford an alternative ... but bears can and do climb trees.

My suggestion is to sting a rope between two large trees high enough and far enough apart where the bear cannot reach it and hoist what ever you have up and over the horizontal stretched rope some where in the middle.

One other item to note and I do not know why ... bears be it black .. brown or grizzle like to and have known to attack and or chase motorcycles. If you do happen to see one on the side of road and what to take a photo ... I suggest you stay on the bike have the motor running with an escape plan in mind. I can only suspect ... unlike a silhouette of a car the bike may resemble the outline of potential prey or ... perhaps they just don’t like motorcycles.

I’m sure we all have experienced or noticed when passing other creatures on a bike it seems to agitate them more then cars or other automobiles.

Never the less ... just try to remember the analogy that a bear has a brain of pea and will do what ever when ever it damn well pleases. When in bear country ... find out ... read and heed all local and posted warnings and never take any bear for granted no matter how big or how small.

Here in Northern California another animal to look out for is the mountain lions. They used to never bother people but haven't been hunted in years and seeem to have lost their fear of man. I was stalked by one once, and seen two others that same year. Recently the company I work for a woman was stalked, but got to her car in time. It was so close she threw a couple of rocks and hit it without any effect. I don't know if it ment to attack or just curious, cats are wierd that way. Several other around have seen them, and once in a while someone gets taken out. Sleep well.
