Morocco this April - To take the tent etc. etc. or not ?

I am leaving for Morocco this weekend, and had initially thought I'd take a small tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, cooker, pot etc. etc. simply for a plan B accomodation option. But now at the last minute I am wondering what peoples experiences and/or recommendations are?? I am travelling alone and only have the bones of a route plan in mind, so how good are the odds of me managing mid to late afternoon each day to find some sort of reasonably priced accomodation?? I'd like to travel as lightweight as possible, and if there is a general consensus that I should perhaps leave all of this plan B stuff behind, then I'll try and find the courage to do so. I have two lockable 35 litre Touratech aluminium panniers, and for security reasons i.e. relative peace of mind for those times when I'll inevitably have to leave the motorcycle alone it would be great if the only extra I had was my medium sized daypack.

Yeah, okay so I am a bit newbie at this... :-)

It's been a while since I went to Morocco but I could always find reasonable accomodation mid-afternoon, for example in Marrakesh and Ourzazate. Outside towns I'd imagine a smile goes a long way with the nomads, and I remember them being very friendly. As always: the more remote, the better the people.

That said: Why don't you take a bivi tent or something like the Exped Southern Cross. Just put the tent poles diagonally into the panniers. ("Tent" doesn't automatically mean "soft luggage on the back").

You can readily find inexpensive accommodation, no need for tent unless you want to camp wild.

I fully agree with T.Cullis - and you wont have to worry (too much) about security.

In the end I decided to leave the tent etc. behind, and for anyone wondering - it turned out to be the right decision.

Hi Noel

Thanks for posting your post-trip thoughts about camping.

Perhaps you should start a thread about taking more than one bank card when you visit Morocco? :)
