compressing tents?

hi

i've got a msr hubba hubba tent, and whilst dummy packing (end of july can't come soon enough!!) im finding it a bit of a pain...

the main problem is that although the fly and inner pack quite small the seem to expand at the first oppertunity to take all available space. I can't pack them in the same bag as the poles, as they are a bit too long to pack flat in the pannier and are up the side on the angle and only just fit on their own.

The local camping shop sell small sized compression sacks... will using these (one for the inner, 1 for the fly) damage the material in anyway? it would make getting the bloody thing neatly in the panniers a damn sight easier??

any advice or magic cures welcomed!

If there was to be a problem, I guess it would have to be deep creases weakening the water proof capabilities or having your zippers bent all out of shape. Personally I never take much care when I pack my tent, allways in a hurry, and it has held up just fine. I don't think a compression cover would damage my tent signifiantly more than I allready do. To be certain though, I'd send an e-mail to couple of manufacturers. On the other hand, compared to sleeping bags, I'm not sure a compression bag would pack it much smaller. If you do opt to mail some manufacturers, let us know what they said.

Some manufacturers actually recommend to stuff your tent randomly into the sack. They say that this prevents folding it on the same creases ver and over again, which would weaken the material.

Perhabs your 'compression' sack is even beneficial, provided you don't do to much compressing!

I use compression sacks for my sleeping bag and tent with no problems. I get the water proof style so a bit extra insurace against a wet bag. You can pack the tent and fly in the same sack and it brings it down to about a third of its original size.
