It's not a stupid question at all. The fact is, you can ride almost anywhere with anything. It comes down to how much you are willing to suffer! Up until Panama, at least, the SV 650 is a fantastic choice. After that, you may experience some trying moments during the odd water crossing, and the suspension may bottom out occasionally (depending on your route). No big deal.

I'd recommend a simpler machine with more clearance and tougher suspension, but if you want to ride the SV, then go for it. It's got a reliable power plant and it's comfy. Chose slightly more "mainstream" roads and have fun!

Ride, man, ride!

Oh. I just noticed that you are planning this trip for the summer... that could be more of a problem than taking the most inappropriate bike. Look into weather patterns!

Yep, it's a stupid question. No reason at all why an SV can't do it. I did it 25 years back two up on a fully dressed CX500.

Worst roads were probably in Bolivia from Potosi to the Argentinian border - I have no idea what it is like nowadays though.

SV650 = comfy? I had the 'S' model and it was comfy compared to being repeatedly stabbed. I guess its subjective!

Still loved the SV though

hi there,

let's turn this one around:
Why you do you think you can't do it on a vstrom?

from what i hear and read it's a good bike with a reliable engine, so why not?

cheers,
sanderd

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
