WANTED - Travel 'Equipment' for BMW F650GS Dakar

Hi,

I'm going trans-africa soon and need to equip my 2006 F650GS Dakar for the trip.

Ideally, i would like to buy the following second-hand equipment:

> Aluminium Panniers (Zega or equivalent, 35 and 41 litre) & Rack
> GPS Unit (Garmin, etc) & bracket
> 39l tank conversion and/or 10l jerry can for spare fuel
> Satellite Phone
> Centre stand
> Front fork dust guards
> Larger, grippier footpegs (touratech or equivalent)
> Tank bag with map holder
> Fairing crashbars & Engine guard
> Any F650GS spares (cables/filters/levers/bulbs/fork seals/brake pads/tubes/spokes+nipples/bearings/fuel line/plugs/knobblies/etc)

> I will also consider buying camping equipment, and anything else you think i'll find useful for the trip - i.e. stove, tent, and so on.

I live in London UK, but can travel to collect if not 'too' far.

If you have ANY of this gear... pls drop a note to "nikmellor(at)hotmail(dot)com", or call me on 07841 498 388.

...thanks, Nik

Don't bother with a satellite phone - just use an unlocked mobile and buy local SIM cards. Use the money saved to buy a nice sounding end-can for the bike (that's what I did)

I'm off around Africa on Saturday and also have 2006 Dakar....I wouldn't bother with the larger tank - much too expensive and you will hardly need it. (depending on your route)

I got most of my stuff from e-bay and people selling on this site. Don't forget to check the european-wide box when searching on e-bay - lots of goodies from Germany.

Good luck getting equipped,

Martin

Thanks

Thanks for the tips Martin - I like the mibile phone trick... i'll use that !

And about the large tank, i'm thinking the same... not really worth it as it's too expensive, so i'll prepare jerry cans, or even those light, red coloured, plastic fuel containers that can hang off the back until they're needed (as i did in South America with no problems).

What route are you taking ? I'd be interested to hear how you're getting on...

Good luck and enjoy the ride amigo ! .. i have to wait till March, i'm jealous ..

Nik

touratech rack

I have a touratech rack that I took off my F650 funduro (I don't know if it is different for the GS) that I am going to sell if you are interested. I live in central London and you can ring me on 078 1300 5152.

Cheers,
Annette

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
