Selling Bike in Santiago
This is not easy. It is virtually impossible to reregister the bike in Chile, so that rules out locals unless you sell on the black market (stolen vehicles). Not only does this mean you would get a bad price it would also bring you into contact with bad people.
A long shot is to sell to another traveller but this complicates their lives travelling with a bike not registered in their name. I would say a 2004 gs 1150 is worth shipping or air freighting back up. However, I have to say this bike is going for about 8.000.000 pesos here on the used market, or almost $15,000 USD What would you want for it? David Santiago, Chile |

When i was in Iquique ( a zona Franca) i met a local that had bought a US registered bike off a traveller legally. what they did was sell it through a bike or car importer in the Zona franca. The importer looked after all registration and import taxes etc then the local Chilean bought it back of the the importer. It didn´t cost a lot to do this, but wether he got the market rate for it i don´t know. There is now a bloke in Iquique importing BMW parts and bikes so you may get a fair price from him.
However Iquique is a long way from Santiago. the next Zona Franca is Punta Arenas. even further in the opposite direction! Just another idea. and not so dodgy as selling illegally! cheers mike |
