rear tanks needed (to buy or to build?)!
 

I need to extend the range on my frankenbike past 500km to get past scrutineering, does anyone have any reccomendations on where to get some designed for some kind of 600-ish dual-sport bike (there is no point trying to get one for the specific bike as there are probably only about 50 on the road in Europe)

Has anyone ever made their own rear tanks, if so what was involved?

I need to find out what sort of mileage I get on my rebuilt overbored engine before I will know what extra capacity I need but probably about 10 litres extra. Last time I needed to do this I just gaffa taped a load of empty drinks bottles to my engine bars but I'm not sure a 'proper race' will allow the 'flying bomb' technique!

I have used Rotopax.com from the US on my GS for some years now, 1 gal for fuel and 1 gal for water, they are indestructable, cheap and can be mounted in many positions, check out the hundreds of bike applications here:

cheers bill, they look ideal for one trip I'm planning on but not sure if they would count as a 'rider hazard' for the heroes-legend rally, you're not allowed panniers or a back box

I know they are UL and CSA certified for fuel containers, but they certainly are not what I would call fuel cells. They come in a few sizes and as you can see in the pics can be mounted many places. Good luck

I love those Rotopax tanks. I ended up using one of these on my Scandinavia trip and it was perfect. It sat behind my pannier like it was designed for it.

My Serow's 10 litre tank has a range of around 140 miles to reserve. Having the other 5 litres gave me a 200+ range which was perfect. However, the unforeseen advantage of carrying extra fuel is the confidence it gives you to run to reserve and get the maximum range out of your bikes tank. I only used it once as I was happy to ride until I ran out and usually found a petrol station before that happened.

These might not be pretty, but seem well made, complete with safety valves etc. Note I think they will be US gallons.

I think that for my heroes-legend elefant I'll need some fairly specific tanks - you can't have anything mounted behind you with 'corners' so will prob have to make an underslung tank between the cans.....

I've got a 5 litre Nomad rear mounted fuel tank for sale at £50, comes with fuel tap, cap & mounts. Originally meant for a KTM EXC, it could possibly be modified to fit.

I love your style :) Last time i found a plastic box wich could hold exactly two of the usual 5 Liter jerrycans so i just screwd this box on the back of by bike like a topcase and fixed the cans inside the box with straps so they dont jump out. Worked all the way through africa, was cheap and the legal way to transport petrol even i did not care ;)
