I would get onto some of the Dakar forums in the UK. I know the ADVrider racing forum may have links to these groups. We have a couple US racers on there, (Charlie Rusaeo) they usually sell off their KTM's every year, sometimes here in the US, sometimes in the UK. They usually buy bikes in the UK and spend a month or so sorting them out.

Lots of used bikes in Spain, France and Portugal if you know were to find them.

A used Dakar bike would be my LAST choice for a travel bike. What are you're intentions?

Patrick

Hey, that would be stylish --- I can just picture you riding with a couple of plastic carrier bags hanging from the bars!!

Talk to Charley Boorman , I hear he has a low mileage one that he might be tempted to part with .

C B is already on the talk trail (didn't take long to organise that!) so you can find him at some theatre or other near you, coming soon: saw it advertised a few days ago for £16 entry per head - how good is that?

Oh yea, his bike will be there as well it seems, so you can admire the mud and check out the saddle.

Even further off thread

Can't believe it: I've just read elsewhere that the Long Way D book is out on 4th Oct - that's the book written faster than the journey took.

Sorry, I'm not going to mention it again, ever.

If you're serious about getting hold of an ex-Dakar Rally bike, maybe contact Si Pavey through Offroadskills.com: Welcome

Four or five of the instructors at his place are regular Dakar riders, and presumably a good source for horribly-abused sand flyers.

Suerte, Dan

For ex-rallye bikes try the Dakar forum, loads of them there. Usually without registration....

Forum - Dakar

Im currently travelling from Netherlands to Japan on a ex Dakar KTM 660 Rallye Replica.... Done about 15000km so far without drama. Before setting out on your trip, my advise, strip the bike to its frame and carefully look for cracks in the subframe, oillines and electrics. After all its a really bike and driven hard nomatter what they say.

The bike is a blast offroad, unfortuanly not to many of that. Looking forward to Mongolie do!
