Wanted..bikes for Europe May 08
We are looking for a couple of bikes, preferably BMW's, 650cc up to buy in London or nearby towards the end of May. We will be onselling eight weeks later (approx). We will just be touring the UK including the TT races this trip.

Hi Gill. Try the bike trader site here in the UK to give yourself an idea of the cost. Bike Trader UK - Buy & Sell New & Used Motorbikes, Motor Bike Loans Finance, Bike Insurance, News & Reviews at Bike Trader

You'll need a postcode for searching. Use W1K 1QA. Thats the Dorchester hotel but they won't mind!

I had a quick look and there seems to be 650GS's on there for £1500-£2000.

You could try the MCN (Motor cycle news) site too. Motorcycles for sale - browse thousands of motorcycles for sale - MCN

Right now there's 6 650GS's from £1500- £3000 on their site.

As long as you've got a valid MOT certificate and current insurance I don't see any problems. Good luck.

BMW650Dakar available
Hi there. I have a BMW 650 Dakar which you could buy/return to me. 2006 model with overland kit. You could buy from me for 3500ukp and then I will buy it back for an agreed figure (say 2500ukp) as long as there is no major damage.

Getting insurance for a non-EU national in the UK can be an issue, check first.

Do not forget to check E Bay UK as well, you may get lucky in finding something you want even if it not a BMW.

If I had the choice of buying one for 1500 or "Hiring" one for 1000 for the 8 weeks I would buy one.

The chances of not selling it for 1000 before you leave are slim, saving you 500 on the hiring.

Is it not possible to buy basic insurance at the point of entry into the UK if you're a non-resident just like every other country? Contact the British Embassy and ask.

You will probably need a UK mailing address, but this is only guessing. Putting someone on my insurance may also work - again I can look into this if you are interested.

Your licence should be recognised (Ozzie should be fine), and they'll do the usual: ask you for claims, etc. I was even given the option of transferring my full no-claims from Ireland to the UK, which I was surprised at, but I couldn't take that option, because I keep a bike insured at home as well, and apparently, you can only have the no-claims on one bike at a time.

As Martin says, you'll need an address.. somewhere the insurance c/o will take into account (probability of bike being nicked from that address, etc). They'll send all the paperwork to that address, so make sure you have someone there who knows the score.

I'd suggest getting an IDL (international driving licence) from your local Automobile club before you leave... it helps to validate your licence, if there are any queries.

If you are planning on seeing the tt races, be aware, the tickets are usually booked up for the tt weeks, sometimes a year in advance.
the Steam Packet company ("cost-a-packet") ferry service from England to the Isle of man is also very expensive at this time, they double the prices for the priveledge of you being treated like cattle.

Thumbs up Insurance in Europe for Aussies
Hi Gillian,

I have been looking into insurance as well for a trip around Europe from July to October year. I am in Tassie and along with a mate from Canberra and another living in the UK currently we are going north via Norway, Sweden, Finland and then through Eastern Europe and the Balkans. We are also looking to buy bikes and resell them in the UK, but I am waiting to get the facts on insurance first. Anyway, this might be helpful to you:

German company:
Green card Insurance for Europe

OR

Dutch Company:
Europe

I have emailed these companies with details or our planned trip and will let you know what works out. Hope this helps.

Would love to know what you guys end up buying/deciding as well!

Thumbs up Definate Insurance Option for Aussies in UK/Europe
Gillian,

In regards to our insurance as mentioned in my last post (above) the German company Knopf Tours came through for us with insurance for 55 Euros per 30 day period (about AUS$90 today), inculding all of Europe and the UK. They also offer a roadside assistance plan which is probably more useful for us (going to Eastern Europe) than it is for you, and health insurance. The Dutch company is yet to reply.

Thanks for advice re insurance. We still haven't sorted out how to get around the uk! Will keep you posted. Hard to buy a bike in a hurry then sell as we leave.
