Used bikes in CA/TX

I'm planning a trip from USA through Central- and South America, starting in January 2002. Where is the best place (not all too far from the Mexican border) to buy a bike? I will also need the bike equipped with bigger tank, alu-cases etc. Any second-hand bike dealers to recommend? I don't want to spend too much time in the States before starting the trip, so it would be nice to have it planned before I go (from Norway).

I'm also looking for a bike to do the same trip but starting in San Francisco on the 1st Nov. Me and a friend both have KTM LC4 640's but we are meeting another mate in Los Angeles on the 6th Nov.
The best site I have found as a starting point is www.cycletrader.com which has bike and dealer listings searchable by areas.
If any one knows a better option I would like to hear it, otherwise I will let you know how we go.
