KLR650 2005 for sale in Argentina/Bolivia etc January 2010
Kawasaki KLR 650 2005.
I am moving from Colombia, now at the Ecuador/ Peru border, towards Bolivia. I want to sell the bike somewhere close to Bolivia/Argentina border, however, everything is possible. We can also drive it to Buenos Aires if you need and change the ownership at the border with Uruguay.
About the bike:
Actual mileage: 47.000
Handle crash guards
Corbin seat (really comfortable!)
New chain and sprockets
Luggage rack (with soft side bags)
Aluminum bash plate
Center stand (very useful)
Led tail-light with safety module (blinks super quick for a second when brake is initially squeezed)
A lot of useful tools and spare parts.
Tube for heavy tools mounted close to the front wheel.
Apart from it:
I bought a new Pirelli rear tyre in Quito and still have the previous one as a spare
New rear shock absorber - bought in Quito from Progressive Suspension. Costs here more than 1100 USD. Imported it from the US for about 700 USD.
New brake pads waiting to be put on as soon as the current ones will retire.
I installed extra 12V cigarette socket, so I have power for my GPS.
I bought an air compressor you can use with the socket if you have a flat tyre.
motorcycle suits - we travel two up so the are two sets for man and women. Woman S/M man L/XL
two helmets - Zeus ZS 3000, with flip-up part
tank bag, side panniers, special wooden plate at the back so you can mount your backpacks, two front side bags - made from two backpacks, but it works.

the motorcycle has US plates so it is easy with the change of ownership. I bought the bike from a Dutch couple in Medellin, Colombia, who bought it from another traveller in Buenos Aires.
The motorcycle goes well even heavy loaded- we go two up, recently climbed to Refugio at the Chimborazo in Ecuador - 4800m altitude.
I am courious about your response.

this is possible the bike will be on sale back in May, but you will have to contact the next owner - I do not know his plans yet :)))

oh no, the bike is still on sale, I just meant that maybe the next owner will be ready by may to sell it to you. Actually, I would love to travel more and head to Chile, but I was stupid to buy an airline ticket which you cannot change...

how does it works with the USA plate?? is the bike american?? isn't it difficult to sell a non from the same country bike?? :)!!!

about american plates. That is the best you can have. The bike has changed owners many times and what you do is you photoshop your registration card to be into your name. No problems.
ok, but how and who does the photoshop "magic" trick! ?? :)!! it sound a bit dodgy with all due respect, i read in many post that is really hard or pricy ti legally import a bike from US!!
said so, we really need to talk about the price again since the bike will have much more Ks on the clock!!! :)!!!

To Photoshop or not to photoshop?

Before using Photoshop to illegally change a motorcycle Title or to fake Insurance for the purpose of selling or buying a foreign registered bike (USA, UK, EU, Aus, Germany etc) in South America please read the following.
In Mexico, I worked for 3 years part time for the International Red Cross, (Cruz Roja) one of my duties was to visit citizens of the United States being held in Mexican jails.
I base what I write here upon heart wrenching personal observations of how quickly, even a well respected motor vehicle insurance company, can find a legality (illegal title transfer for example) to abandon and avoid paying the liabilities of their "clients."
In the event of an accident with substantial property damage and/or personal injury, in most Latin American countries, all persons involved (especially foreign tourists) go directly to jail. The reason being the police on the streets are not authorized to determine fault. Foreign tourists stay in jail until bailed out by their insurance agent or after a judge verifies their insurance coverage.
I visited many foreign tourists, at fault and not at fault in motor vehicle accidents, month after month as they waited in horrid conditions, for their turn on the impossibly over burdened Mexican court docket, for their sentencing or release from jail by a judge.
Most foreign tourists with valid vehicle insurance were released immediately or within a few days.
You might be able to avoid problems if you legally purchase a motorcycle insurance policy. In Argentina a basic liability policy for motorcycles costs about $25.00 USD per month.
If you are a foreign tourist, in any South America country buying insurance for a bike you do not legally own is a criminal act.
As a foreign tourist, importing a motorcycle you do not legally own into a South American country is a criminal act.
Fraudulently applying for a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit for a motorcycle you do not own is a criminal act.
Riding a motorcycle without authorization from the legal owner is a criminal act. It is called theft!

Hi, I'm nera Salta/Argentina these days. I have Swiss Citizenship. My Question: How can I have a US-registered bike registered on me? (to travel south america). How does the paperwork work and how much does it take? Thanks Fabrizio

As I understand it to be, your country of citizenship does not matter for a US-titled bike.
In order to get the title in your name you photoshop your name into the temporary title. You use this photoshopped title when you enter a new country.
In the meantime, you send the proper documentation back to the US and once payments are made etc... detailing the sale, the Department of Motor Vehicles from whichever US state its titled in, sends you a proper title with your name on it.
You need to go through the photoshop deal (or something similar) because the old owner needs to take the bike out of the country with his name on the title and the new owner needs to take the bike into the next country with his/her name on the title the same day or moment (the new owner uses the temporary photoshopped title).
Ignorant question I suppose, but... What is professional motorcycle parking?
For buyers... Yes, do your research. You'll find that borders couldn't care less about what your paperwork looks like. Heck, even a crappy photocopy would work for most. If you actually have STOLEN the bike, that's a different matter. But then, we, other travelers, probably would you get you before the officials, and that you really wouldn't want!
