Hi
You could do worse than checkout Madaan motors Karol Bagh, Delhi www.madaanmotors.com. He's an Enfield dealer and also sells or rents new and restored bikes to travellers. He can also be trusted to organise the paperwork and send the bike home again if you want to keep it after your trip. I met a Canadian guy who had bought a restored 1970s 350 from Madaan and to be honest it was much nicer than a new 500. After 500 miles it was also still running.... Just remember to bargain hard for everything and be absolutely sure about the quality of the bike ypu pick. After all, it's much less hassle to have a bike die on you if you didn't pay top dollar for it! ------------------ Sean

I went over to Delhi in 2000 and bought a bik from the same area from a dealer called Lalli Singh. I have his card if you want further details. The bike was a rebuilt secondhand model but was in excellent condition. I also got a complete set of spares and tools from him and excellent service. He has been doing this type of thing for years and is well used to odd travellers turning up and asking for strange bikes or modifications. Interestingly he also operates a guaranteed buy back scheme which meant that the total cost of my trip was shockingly low after my total bike costs didnt exceed £150 for 5 weeks riding. A bargain by anyones strandards!!!

We shopped around in the motorcycle market when we were there last year. Out friend Frank got a bike from Lali Singh and we hired from Maadan Motors. We paid quite a lot less at Rp400/day and also when the 45-50 deg heat got too much for us and we returned the bike early, we got a refund. Frank could not get any money back from Lali Singh, but then it did say in his contract that he would not get a refund. Overall I would highly recommend Maadan Motors, but remember that even our one year old Enfield shed many large and small parts on our trip, even with a good spannering every morning!!!

WARNING!
Before buying a bike from Mr. Madaan you should be aware of the fact that his definition of a “full restoration” is limited to: Polishing the bike, Spray-painting without primer (he does not even remove the rust), mounting defect (bent) gear axles and “mending” leaking cylinder heads with chrome paint. In addition to this he had changed the frame number on both our bikes to sell them as UK produced classic bikes from the early sixties. In reality the bikes were Indian produced rubbish from the eighties and we spent two hours each day trying to fix them. Best of luck Frode Shelby |
