How to buy a bike in Germany?

Does anyone know of german websites that are the equivalent of www.loot.com (ie ads for second-hand bikes)?

I live in the UK and hold a UK passport - can I just buy a bike in Germany and bring it back on a ferry?

Barry

Barry,

I can't help with the website, but I did buy a bike when I was working in Germany last year and all I did was drive back through Holland and get on the ferry.

The DVLA office in Aberdeen have been very helpful about re-registering with a British numberplate. It takes about four forms (phone Swansea and they will send you out a full importation pack) plus 25 quid admin charge and 60 quid for road tax.

I contacted Carole Nash when I was abroad and they were willing to insure me using the chassis number as I had a German reg plate.

If I remember anything else about the process I'll get back to you.

Steve

G'day Barry

I am an aussie that bought a bike in Traunstein (Barvaria) and not being German could not hold regestration for it.

I travelled to the UK via Hook van Holland/ Harich and went to Worster near Stratford upon Avon to register the bike in my name. The while exersice once in the UK took about 36 hours! They were very helpful! I only had to get a MOT, insurance and pay 80 quid. I was out of the UK within 2 days also with an export cetificate. Easy as that!

Australia is different, it took me nearly 4 months to register my bike here and go through all of our red tape! This would be one of the worst countries in the world for this type of thing with all public servants having their hand out for money!

Anyway mate, good luck.

For a website try mobile.de. it`s in german though. As a NZ citizen I could buy a car in Germany but only because I registered an address here. Insurance smacks you in the teeth as well. Good news, I find 2nd hand bikes and cars relatively cheap here.
Good luck

Hi there!

Actual bying shouldn't be a prob!
Try
www.mobile.de
www.autoscout24.de
www.bikermarkt.de

If you need more - give me a mail!
The insurance and rego WILL be a prob as others stated before - you better ask the German consulate or embassy in your country how to act correctly - I cannot believe that it is impossible for foreigners to buy and drive a vehicle here!
There are even some U.S. cars with U.S. rego riding around from time to time - maybe you can register it in your home country or something alike!!!
Or you know someone who "lends" his address...

Bye the way - I have a cheap but ugly (technically alright) XTZ 660 for sale at the mo and probably in 2 month a Honda Transalp in good condition (just in parts now ;-) )

So if you're interested - drop me a note - a well - I can help you with German and the other stuff as far as I know either ;-)

Greetings Mel...

Barry, have you managed to buy a second hand bike in Germany and import into the UK ? I'm looking for a 2nd hand r1150gs and they seem seriously cheap when compared to the UK - whats the catch ?
