selling my 2003 California registered DR650. Title, registration is all current and in my name.
Availability of bike
I'll ride into Colombia tomorrow (Jan 15th) and will be able to deliver the bike to where ever you are in Colombia. Looking to part with the bike around January end.
Bike is a DR650, 2003 model with 32,000 miles on it. Running perfectly. No issues at all. Ready to turn around in Colombia and go down to Ushuaia. Will do one last service in colombia along with the valve adjust.
Price $2500. I prefer a bank transfer, but cash in US $ is ok. Price does not include luggage! The baggage might also be for sale, but we can talk about that separately.
Suspension - brand new Ricor Racing rear suspension from Procycle. Very firm - good for occasional 2 up and any amount of luggage. No adjustments except for pre-load. Set for 220 lbs.
Front has Ricor Intiminators installed - great for offroad and on-road feel. Spare fork seals available.
Wheels - stock 21 and 17 inches with rimlocks installed - great for running very low air pressures. Changed ball bearings to NSK front and back 14k miles ago for peace of mind.
Tires - Pirelli MT60s on back and MT70 on front - 6k miles ago. am very easy on throttle, hence tires last long. Tubes are heavy duty 3mm thick rubber. No punctures on this trip at all (so far!).
Engine - has new JE high compression piston and rings[/URL] installed 20k miles ago - more power than stock for sure. Runs super smooth. Carb is stock and is jetted for more power. Airbox modified appropriately. Very smooth and tractable power. The new jet size is 155 which is just right at altitudes up to 7-8,000 ft. Above that, i have run the bike at 16,000 ft in the Peruvian andes and it obviously runs rich and loses power at those heights, but a very simple adjustment of the air-fuel mixture screw restores some power. Alternately, if you are going to stay at altitude for a long time, i advise changing the jets back to the stock 140. I can send those to you.
Gas tank - IMS 5 gallon tank. Gets easy 200+ mile range - depending on your riding ofcourse.
Racks Side panel protectors to prevent the side covers from bending or melting in a crash. Works great with my saddle bags to hold them off the hot exhaust. Front rack above headlight - extremely useful for bulky and light loads! I carried my entire camping gear on the front rack through Argentina and Chile. Love it.
Ergonomics Foot pegs: wider, steel footpegs - great to stand up on for long periods of time. Handlebar: ATV high handlebars. great position for someone up to 6' high. Anyone taller might have to stoop just a wee bit in the offroad. Heated grips with on-off switch. These are ugly, but wrap-ons make for a thicker, softer grip, with plenty of heat. Its my third set on 3 different bikes.
Mirrors: folding, retractable mirrors are a must need incase of falls.
Drain plug - changed to a very simply valve-type drain plug making oil changes so extremely easy. No need to remove the drain plug to drain oil.
Seat - Corbin original - wide and firm but a bit heavier compared to Sargent seats. However, it was slashed by a miscreant 20,000 miles ago. No problem with foam. Should be very easy to have a patch sewn on it.
Electrical 12v plug up front for GPS and another for air compressor. All have separate fuses. Tail light: DR250 tail light kit makes for a cleaner, lighter rear end.
Battery: Upgraded to Shorai lithium battery that is just a fraction of the weight of the original with much better amperage
Chain and sprockets: 14T sprocket up front for great torque, 15T is spare. Decent life left, i adjusted the chain 4 times on this trip, and would advise changing them as a set if you are running the full length of S.America.
As you can see, it is has been thoughtfully modified for this trip. Please feel free to get in touch with me with any questions about the bike. The price is mostly firm. Please dont go by the "2003" model year, but by what it is and how it suits you.
I will be honest and forthright in my description of the bike and will happily advise you based on your needs. I am also prepared to have the bike serviced in Colombia in your presence so that we can both go over the bike's condition and i can show you the innards.
